In Defense of Mitt Romney (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Slowly but surely, the votes are trickling in for the New Hampshire GOP primary. Today's vote is often the make or break for any remaining candidates in the field. Some are going to fall by the wayside and bow out of the race by Wednesday morning. Others if they have a respectable showing are going to keep plugging along to South Carolina. One of those people that has an almost certainty to go the distance is Mitt Romney.

Now, there is a segment that comes up with legitimate reasons why they believe Romney wouldn't be a good candidate. Some simply bring up the fact that he is a Mormon. That segment that rests on that issue alone are horribly misinformed.

There are some that seem to want to pigeonhole Romney for a horribly out of context statement. The sound bite that makes it sound like Romney enjoys firing people. A column from Newsworks.org very easily points out how out of context the comment was.

This line isn't anything close to what happened in 2004 when Howard Dean executed the "Yee-Haw" that ended his presidential hopes. The sad thing is, there are far too many people in New Hampshire voting today that will never hear the full comment from Romney and base their decision on one little sentence.

The other folks in the GOP race care little for if the comment is heard out of context or not. According to ABC News, Jon Huntsman used the opportunity to take a jab at Romney. Stating that as opposed to firing people, he likes creating jobs. I bet that if Huntsman was anywhere close to where Romney is in terms of public opinion he would want people to exercise a small margin of fairness in his statements.

Politics is a cutthroat business. Everyone knows that. It's like a bar fight with people in suits. Now while the Los Angeles Times is saying that Romney gave his opponents a gift with the out of context comment, the media wrapped up that gift with a big red bow. By repeating the quote ad nauseum, they are taking and exercising as much fairness with Romney as his opponents are with him.
