Selling a Home During the Holidays - The Property Exchange

COLDWELL BANKER? THE PROPERTY EXCHANGE RECOMMENDS USING HOLIDAY SPIRIT TO SELL A HOME AT THE END OF THE YEAR

Cheyenne, Wyoming 10-29-2013 ? The end of the year is not just about holiday shopping, family gatherings and other festive events.? Many people use the time off to move before the New Year.? The professionals at Coldwell Banker The Property Exchange offer the following tips to help sellers maximize their home?s charm and allure during the holidays:

Increase Curb Appeal: First impressions are critical. If the home is in a snowy area, make sure to clear the walkways and driveway.? Remove any late fall leaves, and ensure the path to the stairs is free of ice. Put up a few exterior holiday lights and decorations to display seasonal tidings and pride in ownership. Do not overdo the lighting. Keep it tasteful and consistent with the rest of the neighborhood. A holiday welcome mat outside the front door is also an inviting touch. ?

Keep the House Warm and Welcoming: November, December and January can be cold, so make sure the home is warm and cozy.? If the house has a fireplace, light a fire to bring the room to life and enhance the ambience.? Bake holiday cookies and treats to give the home an enticing aroma.

Decorate the Interior:? It is important not to overwhelm home shoppers with dramatic displays of holiday cheer, so be conservative with holiday decorations.? Decorate to accentuate the house, not to cover it.? Tasteful decorations will help connect buyers to the home, remind them of pleasant memories and help them imagine their own holiday celebrations there.

Remove the Lock Box: On a more practical note, sellers who are entertaining over the holidays should talk to their real estate sales associate about removing the lock box except during designated appointment times. The multiple listing service information may need to be changed to let sales associates know that there is a temporary showing procedure that requires buyers? sales associates to call in advance for an appointment.? It is best if the house is not shown when entertaining family and friends.

6 Reasons Why People Don't Succeed | Business 2 Community

Is success relative?

Shouldn?t success be defined by what we believe, rather than defined for us by what others think? When you look at different people who you believe are successful, what do they do and have in common?

America?s Foremost Business Philosopher Jim Rohn believes, ?failure is not a single, cataclysmic event. We do not fail overnight. Failure is the inevitable result of an accumulation of poor thinking and poor choices. To put it more simply, failure is nothing more than a few errors in judgment repeated every day?.

Success leaves clues, trails and signs. Success forms patterns and usually follows a set of defined principles.

These 26 very successful people failed many times before they were successful. They simply didn?t give up and they persevered because they believed.

Here are 6 reasons why people don?t succeed

They Become Irrelevant.

Relevance today is dictated by the rapid speed of change driven by technology. Put simply, if you are to compete in this environment you MUST be relevant to compete. Are you up to date, engaged, involved in all of the ways we use to communicate and connect? Regardless if you are starting your own business, or you work for someone else, developing an entrepreneurial mindset will positively impact your success. Take this quiz!

They Are Unwilling or Too Slow To Change.

Get used to transition and change as a way of life. This is no longer a periodic event that we go through. Transition and change are daily occurrences. Change is the path to growth. Don?t resist, respond!

They Have an Underlying Bad Attitude.

?Optimism is a brands best friend?. There is nothing more powerful, transforming, magnetic and bold as a positive, optimistic demeanor and attitude. Clear your bad attitude and harvest optimism.

They Have Skill Gaps.

Make sure all your skills, certifications, qualification are up to date and current for today?s standards. MSNBC?s JJ Ramberg offers 183 Tips from her new book: It?s Your Business! Check out page 229, Tip #156 (yep, it?s mine) about staying on top of trends!

They Have Not Developed A Unique Personal Brand.

Personal branding is valued capital and currency for professional advancement. How you present and market who you are, what you do, and whom you serve , so that you stand out, claim your space and build your credibility is essential and indispensable to success. What do these powerful brands have in common?

They are Undisciplined and Not Focused.

There is a tremendous amount of sacrifice, commitment and daily focus that goes into being an Olympian. These athletes set their goals, surround themselves with a team of coaches and commit to a grinding, daily regimen of practice to achieve. You can apply this Olympian discipline and mindset to any successful endeavor. It?s more than building habits, discipline is about grit, determination and flexibility.

We all get off track, distracted and muddled. It?s human and a fact of life today. If you put the right things in place from the beginning, set yourself up for success and practice, your likelihood for success increases and your personal frustration decreases and will be greatly minimized and tempered.

One more very important reason why people don?t succeed is they don?t have that personal belief.

?Belief in oneself is one of the most important bricks in building any successful venture?.

Are you leaving clues, blazing trails and posting signs?

Three Companies Remain In Race For Springfield Casino License ...

A rendering of the the MGM Springfield project.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) ? Springfield officials say all three casino developers who submitted proposals during the first phase of the city?s selection process have been approved for the next phase of consideration.

Mayor Domenic Sarno, the city?s chief development officer and city solicitor said Friday the three companies were asked to respond to prequalifying questions that were evaluated by a review committee.

The companies, Ameristar Casinos, Inc., MGM Resorts International and Penn National Gaming, Inc., will now present more detailed proposals.

The state?s new gambling law allows up to three regional casinos in the state, including one in western Massachusetts. A casino would have to be approved by local voters and the state gaming commission.

The owners of Connecticut?s Mohegan Sun also are proposing a western Massachusetts casino, in Palmer.

Amazon reports weak results, shares slip

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc reported weak quarterly results on Thursday as the world's largest Internet retailer spent heavily and suffered from an economic slowdown in Europe.

Amazon shares slipped slightly to $220.48 in after-hours trading after the results.

The company said its third-quarter net loss was $274 million, or 60 cents a share, versus net income of $63 million, or 14 cents a share, in the third quarter of 2011. Part of the loss related to an impairment charge from Amazon's investment in daily deal company LivingSocial.

Third-quarter revenue was $13.81 billion, up 27 percent from a year earlier, Amazon also said.

Amazon was expected to lose 8 cents a share in the third quarter on revenue of $13.9 billion, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

Before Thursday's report, Amazon had generated 18 straight quarters of net income, according to BGC Partners.

For the crucial fourth-quarter holiday shopping period, Amazon forecast revenue that missed analysts' expectations. The company also gave a wide forecast for operating income in the period - and the mid-point of the range was lower than some analysts' estimates.

"There's increased competition from mass merchants and big box retailers embedded in that guidance," said RJ Hottovy, an equity analyst at Morningstar. "There's a lot of competition this holiday, and it's not clear how this will play out, even for smart operators like Amazon."

Amazon is facing more competition this holiday season from big retailers such as Target Corp and Best Buy Co Inc, which are planning to match some of the company's prices online.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc, the world's largest retailer, is also testing same-day delivery in some cities this holiday, while Target is selling more exclusive products that cannot be bought at lower prices online.

Amazon is also spending heavily on new distribution warehouses and technology to support its cloud-computing businesses, Amazon Web Services. It is also investing hundreds of millions of dollars a year on digital content to sell through its Kindle tablets and e-readers.

Amazon Chief Financial Officer Tom Szkutak said the company will continue investing heavily in technology and infrastructure and digital content.

The Kindle gadgets are being sold at cost, pressuring earnings in the short term. Amazon hopes to make money when customers use them to buy more physical and digital products from the company.

Amazon launched new Kindle Fire tablets in September and CFO Szkutak said demand has been "fantastic."

Chief Executive Jeff Bezos said in a statement that the new $199 Kindle Fire HD, the new Kindle Paperwhite e-reader and the entry-level $69 Kindle e-reader are the top three best-selling products on Amazon, based on unit sales.

Szkutak said Kindle Fire tablet users are purchasing a lot more digital content through the devices, as well as watching free video content.

The introduction of new tablets and e-readers should be good for digital content sales going forward, he added.

Europe's sovereign debt crisis and recession is reducing consumer demand, sparking concern that even fast-growing Internet companies may be affected.

EBay Chief Financial Officer Bob Swan said last week that the company expected an "OK" holiday season, partly because of macro pressure in Europe.

Amazon said on Thursday that revenue from North America was $7.88 billion, up 33 percent from a year earlier. International sales, including Europe, totaled $5.92 billion, up 20 percent from the same period in 2011.

Panel: Pregnant women, get whooping cough shot - KTRE.com ...

By MIKE STOBBE
AP Medical Writer

ATLANTA (AP) - An expert panel is urging every expecting mother to get a shot preventing whooping cough, preferably in the last three months of her pregnancy to help protect her baby.

The advice follows a frightening resurgence of the dreaded childhood disease. More than 32,000 cases, including 16 deaths, have been reported so far this year, and 2012 is on track to be the nation's worst year for whooping cough since 1959.

It's only the second time a vaccine has been advised for all women during pregnancy. Flu shots were first recommended for them in the 1990s.

The new advice was approved in a vote Wednesday by the government's vaccine advisory panel. Federal health officials usually adopt the group's guidance and promote it to doctors and the public.

Whooping cough, or pertussis, is a highly contagious disease. Its name comes from the sound children make as they gasp for breath.

Despite long-standing childhood immunizations, cases have been climbing in the past decade. Most are infants two months and younger - too young to be vaccinated because their immune systems are too immature.

Health officials increasingly have pushed to get older children and adults vaccinated, to reduce the number of carriers who might infect vulnerable infants. An estimated 30 to 40 percent of infected newborns got the disease from their mothers.

In recent years, a combination vaccine - that included protection against pertussis- was offered to women immediately after they gave birth. Then after a whooping cough epidemic in California, the panel last year recommended a one-time dose of a combination vaccine for expectant mothers, either before or during pregnancy.

But fewer than 3 percent of pregnant women have gotten the vaccination, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Worse, recent research has shown the whooping cough vaccine's protection doesn't last as long as previously thought. A recent study found women vaccinated within two years of their pregnancy had relatively few antibodies to pass on to their newborns. That included women vaccinated early in their pregnancy, said Dr. Mary Healy, the Baylor College of Medicine researcher who led the study. That suggests women need to be vaccinated during the third trimester for it to really have an effect, she said.

Despite the overwhelming vote tally, several members of the panel voiced uneasiness with a lack of data on how effective and safe such a recommendation will be for mothers and newborns.

CDC officials acknowledge they have data on only hundreds of women who got the shots during pregnancy. What's more, the vaccine is only licensed to be given to adults once. Under the new recommendation, women who raise large families may be getting the vaccine three or four or more times.

But CDC experts repeated there's no evidence of serious risk to either mothers or newborns. And they estimated that enacting the recommendation could reduce whooping cough cases by 33 percent, hospitalizations by 38 percent and deaths by 49 percent.

"The benefits of vaccination outweigh the theoretical risks," said Jennifer Liang, a CDC epidemiologist who presented the benefit estimates to the panel.

B.C. group calls for suspension of Chinese miner permits

The B.C. Federation of Labour is calling for the suspension of temporary foreign worker program permits for a coal mine in northeastern B.C.

The BCFL wants the provincial and federal governments to investigate concerns over the hiring of 200 Chinese workers to work in an underground coal mine near Tumbler Ridge.

Concerns include how the workers were recruited and whether or not Canadian miners were given a fair chance to work at the mine first.

HD Mining International, the company developing the coal mine, received 300 applications and interviewed nearly 100 Canadian workers, but none were qualified to work in the mine, said vice-president Jody Shimkus.

"We require temporary foreign workers because we are introducing a highly mechanized form of long-wall mining to the province. There's currently no active long-wall mining going on in Canada or B.C.," Shimkus said.

Shimkus said all the Chinese workers are employed with their parent company in China.

The BCFL has said it is skeptical of the claim that there are no skilled miners to work underground in Canada.

It wants a full investigation and review of the temporary foreign worker program to ensure the rights of Canadian and foreign workers are being upheld.

Chelsea Thornton's slaying of children points to need for mental ...

Kendall Adams, 3, left, and his big sister Kelsey Adams, 4. (Photo by Family photos)

After Chelsea Thornton, a woman with a history of mental instability, shot her 3-year-old son in the head and drowned her 4-year-old daughter in a bathtub Wednesday, the local mental health community was left searching for answers as to whether, and how, such a tragedy could have been prevented.

"I place the blame on our mental health system for this tragedy to happen," said Cecile Tebo, a crisis-intervention specialist and the former commander of the New Orleans Police Department's Crisis Unit.

Thornton, 23, who suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, had recently stopped taking her medication, according to her mother, Eleanor Chapman. Thornton's best friend, Oblique Weavers, said Thornton had been hospitalized, and at times shackled to a bed, for a month at Southeast Louisiana Hospital in Mandeville about a year ago after having a mental breakdown that caused her to defecate on herself.

"If you go to a psych ward and you're s--ing on yourself, how are you going to let her come back home? Why didn't you keep her?" Weavers said Thursday. "Chelsea reached out for help so many times. The people kept sending her home. Some help could've saved the children."

The fact that a parent is committed to a mental institution does not automatically get child protection services involved, said Trey Williams, a spokesman for the state Department of Children and Family Services. Williams said Saturday that DCFS had never had any involvement with Thornton or her children.

According to Weavers, Thornton had been known to snap, "turning into a different person in a moment." During her episodes of depression, she at times locked herself and her children inside for entire days.

Just days before Wednesday's slayings, Thornton told Weavers she wanted to return to Southeast Louisiana Hospital or another mental institution. "I guess she felt like she was starting to lose it," Weavers said.

At that point, Thornton should have taken herself to a hospital, said Meghan Speakes, spokeswoman for the state Department of Health and Hospitals. Regardless of whether she had insurance or could pay, she would have received treatment, Speakes said. "If she had walked into any hospital and said, 'I want to kill my kids' or 'I want to kill myself,' she absolutely wouldn't have been allowed to leave the hospital," Speakes said.

But even if services are available for those with urgent needs, Thornton's story does raise the question of how she, and others like her, can slip through the cracks in the area's outpatient mental health system once they are released from a mental hospital.

"This is what, for years, people like me, along with others in the profession, have been screaming about," Tebo said. "The consequences of having fragmented, insufficient care for chronic mental illness are deadly."

Since January 2008, when Bernel Johnson, a man with a long history of institutionalization and severe mental illness, killed NOPD officer Nicola Cotton, psychiatric hospitals have developed better plans for people once they are released back into the community, said Calvin Johnson, executive director of the Metropolitan Human Services District.

When people are released from Southeast Louisiana Hospital, for example, they leave with a referral to outpatient care, he said. Additionally, if patients need intensive assistance in the community, they are often referred to one of three "assertive community treatment" teams run by Johnson's organization. Those teams, made up of social workers, psychiatrists and others, can help up to 300 people with mental illness navigate in the outside world.

An "intensive case management team" offers similar services for an additional 175 patients.

"In most instances there are slots available," Johnson said. He said he couldn't address whether Thornton ever sought assistance through a district program because of federal privacy laws. But friends and family members said they were not aware that Thornton was cared for by such a team.

More critically for relatives of people in crisis, the district six months ago started a "crisis response team" that specifically responds when patients fail to take medication or need direct intervention. "If she was not taking medication, that team of people could have done the necessary things to get medication to her," Johnson said.

The same unit also has five "respite beds" available at a facility on Tulane Avenue where people can get inpatient treatment, he said. Assistance is available by calling 504.826.2675.

"We have resources," Johnson said. "But we haven't done a good job in making people knowledgeable about those resources."

Dr. Elmore Rigamer, a psychiatrist with Catholic Charities, agreed that there are better mechanisms in place now to refer patients to outpatient services when they are discharged from mental hospitals. But he said those referrals remain imperfect, as the follow-up appointment often does not come until two or three weeks later.

Some patients need to be aggressively pursued to make sure they continue treatment after hospitalization, Rigamer said. That might not be in place for all patients leaving hospitals, he said.

"You really have to be proactive with really fragile people. You can't just discharge them," he said. "You have to have a case manager that sticks to them like flypaper."

Tebo said in-patient beds in metropolitan New Orleans have decreased by 60 to 70 percent since Hurricane Katrina.

While it is not clear Thornton was ever denied care, that decline in available beds has "raised the bar" as to who is admitted to a hospital, leaving many out, Tebo said. She said that problem will likely be exacerbated when Southeast Hospital closes due to the state's current round of Medicaid cuts.

Speakes, however, said that assertion was "ridiculous" because even though Southeast's building is expected to be vacated by Dec. 31, all of its mental health beds will be transferred to private hospitals, many of?them in New Orleans. The state is still in the process of determining where the beds will go, she said.

In the days leading up to the killings, Thornton's friends and neighbors said, they noticed she was acting strangely. However, no one called any authorities to report her behavior because they never suspected that Thornton, who had no criminal record and no history of violence, would have been capable of committing such acts.

Stella Adams, an aunt of Thornton's children on their paternal side, said she was horrified about two years ago to learn that Thornton was living with her children in a house where there were drugs. Deciding to forgo part of her own income, Adams said, she insisted on moving the family into one of her rental properties without charging them for it.

But even though some family members said they were concerned for the welfare of Thornton's children, it appears no one ever filed a valid complaint of child abuse or neglect with state child protection services.

"We have never had any prior history with this family," said Trey Williams, the DCFS spokesman.

That type of inaction, while common, can be deadly for children, said Dr. Catherine Taylor, a Tulane University public health professor. Especially in cases of child abuse, people outside the family tend to "diffuse responsibility" from themselves, assuming that if the problem is really serious, someone else will step in, Taylor said.

"This tragic event, sadly like many other stories of child abuse, is plagued by a belief in the privacy of the family bubble -- whatever goes on within families is nobody else's business," Taylor said in an email message.

"In fact, when it comes to the health, well-being and, in this case, survival of children, it is everyone's business," Taylor said. "If a parent that is struggling reaches out for help, seems isolated and stressed, or seems to be losing it, family, friends and community need to step in."

Anyone suspecting a mental health patient has been off their medication or is in need of services can call either of two 24-hour crisis hotlines managed by professionals. The statewide number is 211. The Metropolitan Human Services District manages another hotline at 504.568.3130.

JuiceDefender Can Be a Battery Savior if You Have a Bit of Patience

Consider how far we have come as a communications-driven society since the days of the messenger pigeon and telegraph. It's about 150 years since the Pony Express rode in the West. From horses to microwave, one of life's mysteries is that battery technology is still dead-ending us. Portable power chemistry hasn't been conquered.

Beneficial mold packaged in bioplastic

ScienceDaily (Oct. 19, 2012) ? Aflatoxins are highly toxic carcinogens produced by several species of Aspergillus fungi. But not all Aspergillus produce aflatoxin. Some, in fact, are considered beneficial. One such strain, dubbed K49, is now being recruited to battle these harmful Aspergillus relatives, preventing them from contaminating host crops like corn with the carcinogen.

In collaboration with University of Bologna (UB) scientists in Italy, U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) scientists Hamed Abbas and Bob Zablotowicz (retired) have devised a new method of applying K49 as a frontline defense against aflatoxin contamination in corn, which causes an estimated $200 million annually in U.S. losses alone.

K49 is known as non-toxigenic (atoxigenic) because it cannot produce aflatoxin, unlike toxigenic strains of A. flavus and A. parasiticus that do. However, K49 is adept at excluding these aflatoxin-producing (toxigenic) "cousins" from ecological niches and resources that both need to survive. Exploiting this rivalry, called bio-competitive exclusion, offers an effective way to diminish aflatoxin levels in soil and in corn kernels.

Abbas is a plant pathologist and lead scientist with the Biological Control of Pests Research Unit, operated in Stoneville, Miss., by the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency. This research supports the USDA priority of ensuring food safety.

Unlike the wheat and barley grains now used as carriers to apply commercial strains of biocompetitive Aspergillus molds, Abbas and UB colleague Cesare Accinelli encapsulated K49 in bioplastic granules made of corn starch and other environmentally friendly ingredients.

According to Abbas, the bioplastic granules improve the beneficial mold's storage life and viability once applied. And because wheat and barley grains are not used as carriers, seed-hungry animals like rats and birds avoid eating the bioplastic granules, giving K49 a chance to release its spores for dispersal to corn plants via wind or insect activity.

In tests, applications of the bioplastic-coated K49 reduced aflatoxin levels by 65 to 97 percent. The scientists' research was published in 2011 in the journal Crop Protection. The technology may also prove useful in delivering other beneficial fungi used to safeguard crops from disease, adds Abbas.

Marketing Biz: Foursquare Search, BloomReach & Message Bus

This week we saw more. More Yahoo changes. More competition in the mobile payments and deals verticals. More funding for BloomReach and Message Bus. More evidence that 140 characters is truly dead. More location analytics services.

Foursquare also made it clear they were a local search engine and the potential bailout of Color by Apple turned me green.

This is ? Marketing Biz.

Foursquare Local Search

Head over to Foursquare.com and search for ?pizza? or a ?sushi.? No need to create an account; just go there and type in what you?re looking for.

Foursquare doesn?t just hand you a one-size-fits-all list of suggestions. Even if you?ve never checked in, Explore still can make great recommendations based on a number of signals, like what?s popular in the neighborhood, new places, places that are trending at the moment, where experts go, and what?s popular on that day of the week. If you search for a bar, we don?t just tell you about great bars, but rather the best places you should go tonight.

Foursquare isn?t being very subtle anymore are they? They want to be the local search destination putting it directly into competition with Yelp and Google. Can the outside in approach (mobile to desktop) work for Foursquare? I don?t know but I?m excited to find out.

For Braintree, the new funding is going to help the company take on giants in the digital payments industry like PayPal. ?We think we can build the next PayPal,? says Braintree?s CEO, Bill Ready. ?The payments game will be won or lost in next few years, and we need the resources to push the company forward aggressively,? he explained in an interview.

The mobile payments vertical gets hotter by the week. PayPal, Square and Google Wallet are all big contenders here but anyone with deep connections in geolocation (Foursquare) and small business (Groupon) are also potential competitors or allies. Marketers should expect favorable business development deals as competition gets fierce.

BloomReach, which offers a big data parsing service that etailers can use to juice their web sites, netted $25 million in new funding which it will use to boost both sales and marketing and research and development efforts.

Creating pages to meet gaps in a site?s keyword universe doesn?t feel like a very stable business. There have been other services that have done something similar that have been marginalized by Google algorithm updates. Furthermore, smart retailers will soon tap into big data as a service and perform this analysis themselves. To flourish, I think BloomReach will have to make this a lower-margin product that targets long-tail retailers.

As to why they?d want Color Labs? We would look to Color?s patents, which may include one for a file format that they were working on to?record HD video. Color said that it had?six patents pending?at the time of its funding, including its ?elastic? social?graph and patents related to GPS location and battery saving. iOS developer Daniel?Jalkut?uncovered several patent?applications?that Color has filed for in the last couple of months that have names like ?sharing?content?among a group of devices? and ?user device group formation?.

This feels wrong in so many ways. Color Labs was a train wreck and for it to be rescued to help build a defensible patent portfolio makes me grab for the Pepto-Bismol.

Called eBay Lifestyle Deals, the offers are being run in a limited number of urban areas, including the San Francisco Bay area, Los Angeles and Washington D.C., according to the company.

Recent deals included $12 for a one-hour dog-walking service worth $25; $50 for a month of Yoga classes worth $110; and $180 for six private gym sessions worth $360.

I know some people are thinking this is confirmation that Groupon really is on to something with deals. I tend to think eBay is just behind the times and playing catchup as best they can.

In a blog post on its website, the Cabana team says that ?We built Cabana because we are passionate about empowering people to develop interactive content in new and innovative ways,? adding, ?that same passion for innovation and the democratization of content creation is also shared by the amazing team at Twitter.?

I can?t say that I used or even understand what Cabana does exactly. Yet, the fact that Twitter is purchasing a company that develops interactive content continues to tell the ?death of 140 characters? story.

Yahoo Chief Revenue Officer Michael Barrett is on his way out at Yahoo, according to a person familiar with the situation. Mr. Barrett is in the process of negotiating his exit, this person said.

The news comes a day after Yahoo announced the hiring of Googler Henrique de Castro as its new chief operating officer.

Marissa isn?t wasting much time populating the new Yahoo with Googlers. The question is how many will she bring over, how quickly and is it enough to change the toxic culture that?s been in place for years?

Yahoo?s latest cost-cutting measure is a big one ? the company will shut down its operations in South Korea by the end of the year. In an internal memo sent late Thursday night (Pacific time),?Rose Tsou, Yahoo?s senior vice-president for Asia Pacific, announced the closure in the face of ?serious and growing challenges.?

This makes a lot of sense and is just one more indication of how Marissa is eliminating distractions from Yahoo?s roadmap.

Placed Panels

Merchants gain insight into where their customers go and whether they actually visit the merchant?s locations, what competitive businesses are visited and what other real-world brand or merchant affinities their customers have.

Location analytics are quite simply one of the most powerful new sources of information a marketer can get their hands on. Tracking user behavior offline and matching it with your online campaigns could dramatically change the multi-channel landscape.

Current email sending practices are similar to CB radio ? where the sender blasts a message out and hopes someone receiving the message on the other end answers. CB radio is old school technology and has largely been replaced by mobile phones ? a system where recipients decide whether and how to have a conversation.

Message Bus is replacing the old school approach where senders simply hope a message was received to a data driven approach where we actively manage the relationship between senders and recipients. With email, your reputation is only as good as the last message you have sent, and in the highly competitive and often abusive/adversarial relationship between senders and recipients, it is very easy to make mistakes where you are suddenly viewed as a bad sender.

If I?m getting the gist of this, Message Bus is out to make email more reliable. That?s a big deal in the still?incredibly-vital-yet-unsexy area of email marketing.

?SEO is a great way to build cause awareness, educate the public and reach funding goals at an accelerated rate,? said Tim Davis, Chief Advancement Officer at the National Kidney Foundation. ?We are delighted to have been awarded the Conductor SEO Grant and we look forward to working closely with The Conductor Foundation and utilizing their resources to reach our search goals.?

I?ll be honest, this made it into the column in part because of my personal interest. My daughter only has one kidney. Nevertheless, it?s nice to see non-profits understand the value of SEO and that Conductor is helping educating this sector through their foundation grants.

Gun industry thrives during Obama's term in office

Carrie Antlfinger / AP

This photo taken Aug. 22, 2012, shows Central Wisconsin Firearms owner Frederick Prehn in his store in Wausau, Wis. He says he's had to expand his business to the new location last summer because of increased gun sales.

By Eileen Sullivan, Jack Gillum, The Associated Press

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama has presided over a heyday for the gun industry despite predictions by the National Rifle Association four years ago that he would be the "most anti-gun president in American history." Gun buyers fear that Obama wants to restrict their purchases, especially if he were re-elected.

An analysis by The Associated Press of data tracking the health of the gun industry shows that sales are on the rise, so much that some gun manufacturers can't make enough guns fast enough. Major gun company stock prices are up. The number of federally licensed, retail gun dealers is increasing for the first time in nearly 20 years. The NRA is bursting with cash and political clout. And Washington has expressed little interest in passing new gun laws, despite renewed calls to do so after recent deadly shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin.

Obama has made no promises to impose new gun control legislation and doesn't have the support in Congress or among voters even if he did. During this week's presidential debate, Obama suggested renewing a U.S. ban on assault weapons and coming up with an overall strategy to reduce violence, but both Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney said the government needs to enforce gun laws already on the books.

"The driver is President Obama. He's the best thing that ever happened to the firearm industry," said Jim Barrett, an industry analyst at C.L. King & Associates Inc. in New York.

Tennessee lawyer Brian Manookian said he never considered himself a gun enthusiast like others in his state. He owns only one handgun. But the firearms industry has proved so lucrative for him that he's enthusiastic now. Manookian and his business partner, Gary Semanchik, opened a $5 million firearms retail and training complex in September in Nashville.

Inventory is selling three to four times faster than they expected since the facility opened.

"It is a very strong investment," Manookian said.

Gun dealers up
Others agree. For the first time since 1993, the number of federally licensed retail gun dealers in the U.S. increased slightly in 2010 and 2011, as the country added 1,167 more licensed retail gun dealers, according to Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives records. After the assault weapons ban in 1994, the number of gun dealerships dropped annually until 2010. As of October 2012, there were 50,812 retail gun dealers ? that's 3,303 more than in 2009.

Gun shops across the country are holding "Ladies Nights," as the number of women who own guns increases. CNBC's Diana Olick explains.

"Business has been very good," said Frederick Prehn, who a year ago opened a small gun store above his dentistry practice in Wausau, Wis. In the past year, Prehn has relocated twice to larger spaces and gone from one employee to eight.

Some gun store owners can't keep shelves stocked, said Brian Jones, owner of Bullseye Shooter's supply in Painted Post, N.Y. Jones said he opened his gun store in November 2010. In his first year, Jones said he sold between 600 and 700 guns. A little more than halfway through his second year, he's already sold 700.

For the first time in the company's history, Sturm Ruger & Co. Inc. stopped taking orders for a couple months this year. Ruger, one of the nation's largest gun manufacturers, has since resumed taking orders, though gun-sellers say demand is still outpacing production.

Obama is not yet through his first term, but the federal government already has conducted about as many background checks for gun owners and prospective buyers on his watch as it did during the first six years of George W. Bush's presidency. In the first 3 1/2 years of the Bush administration, the FBI conducted about 28 million background checks. During the same period of the Obama administration, the FBI conducted more than 50 million. The gun industry uses the number of background checks on gun owners as a reliable indicator of demand.

Ruger and Smith & Wesson represent nearly 30 percent of the U.S. gun manufacturing industry and lead the market in production of pistols and revolvers, according to government statistics. The two companies have been running production lines around the clock, hiring workers and operating at maximum capacity, said Barrett, an industry analyst who also owns Ruger stock.

Ruger's sales have increased 86 percent since Obama took office, and Smith & Wesson's sales have gone up nearly 44 percent, compared with 18 percent for overall national retail sales.

And the companies have big expectations for the industry's future, as they're spending more money on research and development than ever before.

"Wouldn't you want to be in a business where customers are just begging to hand you money?" said Bill Bernstein, owner of East Side Gun Shop in Nashville, Tenn.

NRA has more cash
The NRA itself has done well, too. The lobbying organization has had more cash on hand during the Obama years than it did since 2004, finishing 2010 with more than $24 million, according to the most recent figures available.

"Which makes it incredibly ironic that the gun lobby is opposing Obama," said Dan Gross, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. Gross said Obama, who initially campaigned to reinstate the assault weapons ban that expired under Bush, has done what he said was "disappointingly little" on gun control.

But the gun lobby says the success of the industry does not indicate that Obama is good for Second Amendment rights.

"This is the most dangerous election in our lifetimes," NRA chief executive officer Wayne LaPierre said in February, a point he's made regularly during the NRA's campaign to defeat Obama.

The NRA stands by its 2008 predictions that Obama would be anti-gun. NRA spokesman Andrew Arulanandam noted Obama's appointment of two Supreme Court justices whom the NRA considers anti-gun, plus Obama's support of a United Nations arms trade treaty and the botched gun-walking operation called Fast and Furious, which the NRA believes was concocted as part of a plan to enforce new gun restrictions.

"Gun owners and hunters fear that a second Obama administration with no future political campaigns to worry about will try to destroy this great American freedom," Arulanandam said.

It is hard to find a single aspect of the gun world that isn't thriving.

Fears of a Democratic president taking office and issuing stricter gun control laws led to an initial spike in gun sales in 2008, giving gun dealers some of the highest profit margins they've ever seen. But even after it became clear Obama was not going to make gun control a priority as president, the industry has continued to do well.

Fear of crime may be driving some sales. The number of violent crimes rose by 18 percent in the U.S. in 2011, according to Justice Department figures released this week. It was the first year-to-year increase for violent crime since 1993, marking the end of a long string of declines.

Firearms sales typically increase during poor economic times, said Steve Sanetti, chief executive officer and president of the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a trade association for the industry. More Americans are hunting and shooting for recreation as well, he said. Sanetti attributes that to military servicemen and women with firearms experience returning to civilian life and wanting to keep up with shooting as a pastime. He also said recreational shooting is a relatively cheap and accessible hobby, drawing in new buyers.

Not a priority for voters
Voters have made clear that gun control isn't a priority. A recent AP-National Constitution Center poll found that 49 percent of adults felt laws limiting gun ownership infringe on the public's right to bear arms, while 43 percent said such laws do not infringe on those rights. After the recent mass shootings in Colorado and Wisconsin, 52 members of Congress sponsored a bill to track bulk sales of ammunition, but the legislation went nowhere.

Bernstein and others attribute some of the industry's success to all but one state ? Illinois ? offering permits to carry a concealed weapon. In some cases, people have been buying guns because they're afraid of the day they won't be able to.

"Any gun owner might fear that," said Justin Paulson, a 22-year-old grad student in Nashville who recently purchased a handgun from Bernstein's store. Paulson said he's been collecting guns since he was 18. He's currently up to 16. He purchased his most recent handgun because he thought the one he had was too small to defend himself. And the timing of his purchase was deliberate. "Chances are things might be a little tighter in terms of control come November," he said.

Fears about new gun laws mean dollar signs for the gun industry.

Bernie Conaster, owner of Virginia Arms Co. in Manassas, Va., has doubled the size of his suburban Washington gun store, hired more employees and paid bonuses since Obama has been in office.

"I certainly don't want to stoke the fire," said Conaster, "but I'll ride the wave while it's here."

Chronic stress during pregnancy prevents brain benefits of motherhood

ScienceDaily (Oct. 13, 2012) ? A new study in animals shows that chronic stress during pregnancy prevents brain benefits of motherhood, a finding that researchers suggest could increase understanding of postpartum depression.

Rat mothers showed an increase in brain cell connections in regions associated with learning, memory and mood. In contrast, the brains of mother rats that were stressed twice a day throughout pregnancy did not show this increase.

The researchers were specifically interested in dendritic spines -- hair-like growths on brain cells that are used to exchange information with other neurons.

Previous animal studies conducted by lead author Benedetta Leuner of Ohio State University showed that an increase of dendritic spines in new mothers' brains was associated with improved cognitive function on a task that requires behavioral flexibility -- in essence, enabling more effective multitasking. The dendritic spines increased by about 20 percent in these brain regions in new mothers, according to her findings.

The stress in this new study negated those brain benefits of motherhood, causing the stressed rats' brains to match brain characteristics of animals that had no reproductive or maternal experience.

The stressed rats also had less physical interaction with their babies than did unstressed rats, a behavior observed in human mothers who experience postpartum depression.

"Animal mothers in our research that are unstressed show an increase in the number of connections between neurons. Stressed mothers don't," said Leuner, assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at Ohio State and lead author of the study. "We think that makes the stressed mothers more vulnerable. They don't have the capacity for brain plasticity that the unstressed mothers do, and somehow that's contributing to their susceptibility to depression."

Leuner described the research during a talk on October 13 in New Orleans at Neuroscience 2012, the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience.

Previous research has suggested that there are a number of risk factors for postpartum depression, including hormone fluctuations, prior history of mental illness and environmental factors such as smoking or low socioeconomic status. One of the strongest predictors, however, is chronic stress during pregnancy, so Leuner sought to create an animal model that could help explain brain changes linked to postpartum depression.

"It's devastating not only for the mother, because it affects her well-being, but previous research also has shown that children of depressed mothers have impaired cognitive and social development, may have impaired physical development, and are more likely as adults to have depression or anxiety," she said. "A better understanding of postpartum depression is important to help the mother but also to prevent some of the damaging effects that this disorder can have on the child."

The researchers exposed pregnant rats to stress twice a day by limiting their mobility on some days and on other days placing them in water. For three weeks after the rats gave birth, Leuner and colleagues monitored the rats.

The animals showed classic signs of the effects of stress, including lower than normal weight gain and enlarged adrenal glands, a sign of high stress-hormone production. The mothers stressed during pregnancy also gave birth to smaller pups.

"And they were not very good mothers," Leuner said. After separation from pups for 30 minutes, unstressed mothers would gather up their babies, put them in the nest and nurse them. Stressed mother rats left the pups scattered around, wandered around the cage and fed the babies less frequently. The stressed mother rats also exhibited more floating than unstressed rats in a water test; animals that float rather than swim are showing depressive-like symptoms.

"These findings in rats mimic some of the symptoms that are seen in women with postpartum depression," Leuner said.

An examination of the animals' brains showed that the rats exposed to chronic stress did not grow the additional dendritic spines in the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex that the unstressed mother rats did. The stressed rats' brains more closely resembled the brains of control rats that had never been mothers.

"We don't yet know what the exact trigger is for the increase in spines in motherhood, but we know that the increase goes away with stress," Leuner said.

She is continuing the work by investigating whether the beneficial effects of motherhood on cognitive functions are also blocked in mothers who are exposed to pregnancy stress as well as whether hormonal factors play a role.

This work was supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and a Brain & Behavior Research Foundation Young Investigator Award. Leuner co-authored the presentation with Peter Fredericks of Ohio State's Department of Psychology.

UPDATE 1-Baseball-Tigers edge Athletics for 2-0 series lead

* Kelly becomes unlikely hero for Detroit

* Oakland trail 2-0 with series heading back home (Adds details, quotes)

Oct 7 (Reuters) - Don Kelly hit a sacrifice fly to right-field in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Detroit Tigers a 5-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Sunday and a commanding 2-0 lead in their playoff series.

Kelly's drive off A's closer Grant Balfour scored Omar Infante to cap a wild finish in which both teams scored late, game-tying runs on wild pitches after Detroit took a seventh-inning lead on a two-run error.

Detroit reliever Al Alburquerque, who retired Yoenis Cespedes on a grounder with men on first and third in the ninth for the only batter he faced, took the win. The Australian Balfour got the loss.

Detroit moved within one win of advancing to the American League Championship Series, with the best-of-five AL Division Series shifting to Oakland on Tuesday.

"They (Detroit) got big hits and did good things at the right moments," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "Both teams made some mistakes that got the other team in the game."

The clash between Central champions Detroit and West winners Oakland began as a pitchers' duel with Tigers' starter Doug Fister and his A's counterpart Tom Milone each allowing just one run through six innings.

Cliff Pennington put Oakland on top with a run-scoring single off Fister in the top of the seventh.

The Tigers struck back in their half of the seventh off reliever Sean Doolittle.

With two outs, Triple Crown winner Miguel Cabrera came to the plate with men on first and second and hit a shallow fly ball to centre.

Oakland outfielder Coco Crisp raced in, but the ball bounced out of his mitt and he bobbled it once more before it fell to the ground as Austin Jackson and Infante came around to score and put Detroit ahead 3-2.

"They played deep and made the error," Cabrera said. "I feel sorry for him (Crisp). But you need the little things and to get lucky."

Oakland leapfrogged the Tigers in the eighth when Cuban rookie Yoenis Cespedes singled, stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch in the dirt from Detroit reliever Joaquin Benoit with Josh Reddick at bat.

Reddick, who had struck out in all six of his previous at-bats in the series, promptly homered to right to give the A's a 4-3 lead.

A wild pitch by Oakland reliever Ryan Cook with men on second and third and two outs allowed the Tigers to tie the game in the bottom of the eighth.

The A's stranded runners on first and third in the top of the ninth, with Alburquerque retiring Cespedes on a comeback grounder before Detroit ended it in their last at-bat.

Singles by Infante and Cabrera, who had three hits in the game, put men on the corners with one out off Balfour. After an intentional walk was issued to dangerous slugger Prince Fielder, the light-hitting Kelly lined an 0-1 pitch to right for his first career walk-off run batted in.

"I was just trying to get a pitch to hit," said Kelly, who had entered the game as a pinch-runner in the eighth inning.

"It was awesome, the crowd was into it. To get to go up 2-0 in front of our home fans was huge." (Reportring by Larry Fine in New York; Editing by Julian Linden)
