Flexible work schedules are good for business, expert says - Life Inc.

By NBC News staff

Workplace expert Ken Matos joined us for a live web chat Thursday to answer your questions about the workplace.

Ken is Senior Director of Employment Research and Practice at the nonprofit workplace think tank Families and Work Institute.

He?s also co-author of the forthcoming book ?WORKFLEX: The Essential Guide to Effective and Flexible Workplaces.?

Here?s one of Ken?s answers to questions from the live chat. (See below for the full Q&A.)

One guest asked:

?Why would my boss want to offer flexibility when there are 20 other people lined up to take my job??

Ken replied:

?Many people question whether asking for workplace flexibility is a good choice in a rough economy. They tend to be afraid they will seem uncommitted or their employer will be unsympathetic. However, there are benefits for an organization from workplace flexibility that employers should be especially interested in during a rough economy.?

?For example, when employers and employees commit to honest communication about how to secure both a better work experience and high client satisfaction, organizations can become more proactive, efficient, and ultimately effective. Actually taking the effort to periodically examine how work gets done can lead to insights on how to do work more efficiently. Leslie Perlow, a researcher at Harvard Business School, just put out a great book entitled Sleeping with your Smartphone: How to Break the 24/7 Habit and Change the Way You Work. It describes how one high-speed consulting company used workplace flexibility to improve the effectiveness of their work and the morale of their employees (line and managerial) at the same time.?

?These conversations can also lead to less absenteeism because employees can work with their employer to minimize work-life conflicts. Let?s face it, an employee who needs to care for a sick relative is going to find some way to do it and it?s better for all involved to plan around the absence rather than have it be a secret surprise.?

A survey released Thursday shows that work time flexibility is worth more than money for some employees.

You can continue the conversation with Ken and the Families and Work Institute on Twitter here.

(AP) ? This U.S. Open finally got its first shocker.

After three days of the top players not only winning but winning decisively, fifth-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was upset by Martin Klizan of Slovakia in the second round. The 52nd-ranked Klizan won 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 on Thursday.

Before Tsonga's loss, top-five seeds on the men's and women's sides had played 14 matches ? and won all 14 in straight sets.

Tsonga was the runner-up at the 2008 Australian Open and a semifinalist at Wimbledon this year. He had reached at least the third round in 18 straight Grand Slam trips.

"Today I was not in a good shape," he said. "I didn't play good tennis. It seemed like I couldn't hit the ball enough hard to put my opponent out of position. I don't really know why it was like this today, but sometimes it's happen with me."

The 23-year-old Klizan, meanwhile, had failed to make it past the second round in three previous Grand Slam appearances. He had never defeated an opponent ranked better than No. 49.

"I had no pressure," Klizan said. "If I lose, then I lose. I lose with (a) good player. But I won and I'm very happy. It means for me more that I beat finally a guy from top 10."

This year's Open has generated plenty of drama in one area: comebacks from two sets down. American Mardy Fish rallied to beat Nikolay Davydenko 4-6, 6-7 (4), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2, the 10th time in this tournament a man has won after losing the first two sets ? already an Open record.

The 30-year-old Fish, seeded 23rd, missed two months this season because of an accelerated heartbeat but showed few signs of fatigue in playing nearly 3 1/2 hours.

And after Tsonga lost, another top-five seed was at least pushed beyond a straight-sets finish. Second-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was down a set and a break to 39th-ranked Carla Suarez Navarro. Then she won 11 straight games for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 victory.

Jack Sock also reached the third round at a major tournament for the first time. The 19-year-old from Nebraska beat Flavio Cipolla 6-2, 6-2, 6-4.

Sock, ranked 248th, got in with a wild card. He saved 12 of the 13 break points he faced, while converting all six he earned on the 88th-ranked Cipolla's serve.

Next up is a meeting with No. 11 Nicolas Almagro of Spain, a 6-3, 5-7, 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 winner over Philipp Petzschner.

A week before the start of the Open, Ana Ivanovic couldn't walk without pain in her right foot.

"That's when I started to panic a little bit," she said.

Two matches into the tournament, the 2008 French Open champion is feeling healthy ? and relaxed. The 12th-seeded Ivanovic and another Serbian former top-ranked player, Jelena Jankovic, have quietly reached the third round at Flushing Meadows. Each has dropped just nine games through a pair straight-set wins.

Ivanovic beat 51st-ranked Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden 6-2, 6-2 on Thursday. Jankovic, seeded 30th, defeated 115th-ranked Lara Arruabarrena-Vecino of Spain 6-4, 6-2.

Asked if the torn tendon is fully healed, Ivanovic laughed and said, "I still have a handful of pills every morning."

But the foot hasn't been hurting since the tournament started, and Ivanovic's draw is looking fairly painless with Caroline Wozniacki and Francesca Schiavone eliminated in her quarter.

Ivanovic has been trying to regain her health and her confidence for the last four years. She has yet to make it back to even a quarterfinal of a Grand Slam event.

"I'm really motivated. I want to get back to the top and back in contention to win Grand Slams again," Ivanovic said. "It's been a long process of getting my mind there and my body and game and everything together. Still, it's going to be a lot of hard work and long process, but I'm starting to enjoy it as well.

"I know if it doesn't happen this week, it's coming."

No. 1 Roger Federer opens the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium against 83rd-ranked Bjorn Phau. Then sixth-seeded Angelique Kerber takes on seven-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams, the juicy second-round match made possible because the American is unseeded after missing time because of illness.

In other women's second-round action Thursday, 13th-seeded Dominika Cibulkova and No. 14 Maria Kirilenko advanced in straight sets.

Kei Nishikori, seeded 17th on the men's side, eliminated American Tim Smyczek.

We have to forget the defeat and move on: Taylor

Bangalore, Aug 30

New Zealand captain Ross Taylor said that his boys have to forget their huge defeat in the first Test as they brace up to take on India in the second Test starting here Friday.

The Kiwis had suffered a shocking defeat in the first Test by an innings and 115 runs at Hyderabad August 26.

"We have to forget the defeat quickly and move on to the next game. At the team meeting, we have decided to fight back and are working hard to play against spin this time. It is never easy losing a Test match by an innings. We will attack the spinners as we have nothing to lose," Ross Taylor told reporters Thursday at a pre-match press conference here.

Admitting that it was tough playing against a strong team like India in India as the conditions were favourable to the home team, Taylor said the team had devised a strategy to tackle the Indian spin duo Ravichandran Ashwin and Pragyan Ojha to stay in the contest and try to level the two-Test series.

"We have to be brave and courageous to launch an attack and put pressure on them (spinners). Then the other batsmen can bat confidentially," Taylor asserted.

Ashwin and Ojha took 18 wickets between them in the Hyderabad Test, with the Tamil Nadu offie picking up dozen in both innings.

Hinting that there would be no change in the batting order so as to give another chance for those who played in the first Test, Taylor said they would get another opportunity to perform and fight back.

Echoing Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Taylor said the first session would be important for both teams as it would test the ability and strength of the players with bat or ball.

"We have experienced in the last three-four Tests that it takes one bad session to ruin a match. We don't want to look too far ahead. We want to take Test by Test and session by session," Taylor observed.

Noting that it was too early to gauge the pitch and how it would behave as the game progressed, Taylor said the wicket condition would depend on the weather as it had been raining in Bangalore over the days with an overcast sky most of the time.

"We have to see how much sun the pitch gets as it has been mostly cloudy since we landed here Tuesday and started practicing Wednesday. Though it (pitch) looks hard at top, it could be soft beneath. It is bound to change depending on the weather we get during the match," Taylor pointed out.

On his batting form as he scored only two hundreds in the last 30 Test innings, Taylor said though it was not great, he felt he was not far away from making big runs as he was working hard to bat well and stay at the pitch for longer.

Asked for his comments on the criticism of former New Zealand coach Mark Greatbatch that the Kiwis failed to play spinners in the sub-continent despite specialised training on how to play them back home, Taylor said there were no two opinions on the need to tackle spinners if they had to win in the sub-continent.

"We are great critics of ourselves. I am also too critical about myself. I am disappointed over how I have played and I would like to improve in the next innings," he quipped.

The Kiwis are hoping to level the series by taking advantage of the damp pitch and its green tinge if the weather continues to remain inclement and the sky overcast.

Study: Workers' Comp Reform Bill Increases Costs $300M - Russo ...

By Don Jergler | August 27, 2012

A workers? compensation reform bill was officially introduced on Monday,?and the same day?the California Workers? Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau issued a study saying the bill could produce a savings of nearly half-a-billion-dollars.

But that savings will be outpaced by benefit increases called for in the bill, increasing system wide costs the tune of $300 million annually, according to WCIRB, which outlined its preliminary costs estimates in a letter?released on Monday.

Senate Bill 863 is authored by state Sen. Kevin DeLeon, D-Los Angeles and coauthored by Sen. Jose Solorio, D-Anaheim, but not? by Ted Lieu, D-Torrance, whose bill on workers? comp liens is being used as a vehicle for the reform language.

Lieu, who chairs the Senate Labor and Industrial Relations Committee, has reportedly been involved in hammering out the proposal. However, he begged out as the bill?s author because he already has a lot on his plate, a Lieu spokesman said.

The bill comes from talks between labor and a handful of large, self-insured employers, which have been reportedly ongoing since October. With this year?s legislative session winding down, lawmakers will have about a week to review and vote on a 100-plus-page bill that contains roughly 60,000 words.

The two groups had come up with?the proposal, which has been circulating?in various forms for the past two weeks,?which was intended as an attempt to fulfill the the need for roughly $700 million in additional permanent disability benefits for injured workers, and $1.4 billion in system wide savings.

Christine Baker, director of the Department of Industrial Relations, who was reportedly involved in negotiations and has backed the proposal, indicated further reforms to the bill could be made in coming days.

?WCIRB data is now available and is being released to advise the public of information pertaining to costs and savings through a proposal to bring comprehensive reform California?s workers? compensation,? Baker said in a statement. ?The reform proposal will be carried in SB 863, introduced by Senator DeLeon and co-authored by Assembly member Solorio. While this information is being made publically available, reform discussions continue in an effort to find the best solution to protect employees while preventing increases in the cost of doing business in the state.?

Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones in a statement expressed concerned about rising costs in the system.

?The analysis by the WCIRB indicates that SB 863 has cost savings that significantly offset the costs of providing needed increases of permanent disability benefits for California?s injured workers,? Jones said.? ?I remain concerned about continued rising costs in the system, however, particularly medical costs and the expenses to adjust workers? compensation claims, and encourage all stakeholders to look for additional ways to reduce system costs.?

WCIRB in a letter to Jones and Baker dated Aug. 24 outlined areas in which the bureau was able to produce cost estimates:

?Among the areas impacted by the proposed amendments for which the WCIRB was able to provide a preliminary cost analysis are permanent disability (PD) minimum and maximum weekly benefit levels, the burial allowance, supplemental job displacement benefits, the adjustments to the PD rating corresponding to future earning capacity (FEC), permanent disability impairment ?add-ons? for psychiatric impairment, sleep disorders or sexual dysfunction, the three-tiered system of PD weekly benefits based on return to work status, the rate at which PD benefits are paid, liens, reimbursements for spinal implant hardware, fee schedule values for ambulatory surgical centers (ASCs) and the process for resolving medical treatment disputes.?

WCIRB in its letter identified an overall cost reduction of roughly $400 million, which it said was based on an estimated statewide cost of indemnity and medical losses and loss adjustment expenses of $19 billion on injuries occurring in 2013. That 2013 estimate is based on the estimated cost of indemnity and medical losses and loss adjustment expenses as reflected in WCIRB?s Jan. 1, 2013 rate filing.

However, the increased permanent disability benefit provisions effective on injuries occurring on or after Jan. 1, 2014 are estimated to increase total costs by $700 million in 2014.

Therefor the proposed legislation will increase total system costs by $300 million annually, according to WCIRB?s estimates.

The estimates in the letter do not provide figures for areas such as medical provider networks (MPNs), admissibility of medical reports completed outside a valid MPN, home health services and permanent disability advances.

A spokesman for WCIRB said the bureau would examine the figures further and provide better estimates if the bill is passed.

The American Insurance Association weighed in on the bill. ?Marjorie Berte, AIA?s Western regional vice president, pointed out anticipated rising costs will outpace savings figured into the bill.

?Much work went into the bill?s development,? Berte said in a statement. ?However, the expectation by proponents that savings would be twice the cost of benefit increases is now dashed by preliminary estimates released today by the Workers? Compensation Inspection & Rating Bureau (WCIRB).? The WCIRB concludes that while claim frequency utilization costs will decrease by $400 million on an annual basis, permanent disability benefit costs will increase by $700 million?adding $300 million annually in new costs to the system beginning in 2014.?Expectations of net savings of two to one are now put at a net cost increase of 1.4 percent annually.?

Networking with Social Media? ? Networking HQ BLOG with Larry ...

Social media is a way to transmit, or share information with a broad audience. Everyone has the opportunity to create and distribute. All you really need is an internet connection and you?re off to the races. On the other hand, social networking is an act of engagement. Groups of people with common interests, or like-minds, associate together on social networking sites and build relationships through community. (Source: SocialMediaToday.com)

What is Social Networking? Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision. There are a number of social networking websites that focus on particular interests. (See BONUS Article list below) Two-thirds of online adults (66%) use social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace or LinkedIn.

?Social media isn?t effective if you use it to simply ?collect? people so you have large numbers. Collecting connections and followers is a numbers game and it is very easy to do so. However just collecting people doesn?t mean your creating valuable relations that are relative and relevant to your business.? ~ Jay Deragon

There are dozens of really great reasons why to use social media but we?ll keep it to the top ten. They are:

1. You will find whomever you want to do business with somewhere online.
2. You will find whatever knowledge you need about any market or any person online.
3. You can reach your market by simply engaging in the right conversations with the right people. This is more effective than advertising.
4. If your business can?t be found, isn?t engaging with the market or worse yet ignoring the market you are not likely to be creating transactional opportunities while your competition does.
5. Communications is a system to leverage your organizations ability to communicate with your market. Social media is the new communications system.
6. Social media saves time and money if you use it right for the right things.
7. If you learn ?how? to use social media correctly then you?ll understand ?what? your market is looking for and ?where? they are looking. You?d want them to look for you.
socialMedia8. ?When? your customers and prospects are engaging about you, your industry or your products and services you need to be there listening. Otherwise how will you gain the necessary market intelligence, be enabled to respond or even be aware of problems or needs. If you are not present when and where the conversations are occurring you are basically out of touch with your market.
9. Communications is about reach. Communicating is about relational dynamics between people. Social media provides the means to effectively communicate with your market. However communicating in human rather than institutional terms.
10. If you are not communicating (listening first, initiating second) then how in the world do you expect to create relationship with people and businesses that may want the value you offer? (Source: http://www.relationship-economy.com)

A profile photo or company logo is worth a thousand tweets! Use a real photo of you or company logo on your social media profiles. (not your kids, not your car, and not some bizarro unidentifiable thumbnail image). Don?t use a cartoon character or your pet?s photo. Help your connections put a face with a name. They?ll be more likely to remember you when they need to find someone with your expertise or product. I will never communicate (?like?) with a Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Pinterest or LinkedIn site without a photo.

Use your real name to brand professional profiles on social media sites. Take personal brand management seriously. Facebook, one of the best-known social media sites on the Internet today, has become a valuable way of networking outside your circle.

47TwitterFollowersKeep things professional. Make sure you don?t communicate anything you wouldn?t want your clients, prospects or potential employers to read.

Twitter and Facebook are no longer just for college kids who want to post their party pics. Businesses increasingly use these sites to promote brands, products and services, and as a means to building more authentic business relationships. They have learned how to be brilliant, pithy and relevant in 140 Characters. While setting up a profile on Twitter sites may cost zero dollars, its management requires constant care and feeding. And I will add, social media sites can become quite addictive. Be sure to manage your time with social media sites or they will end up managing you! ;-)

A great book! Click cover for info

Get creative in selecting networking options. Many people overlook industry/professional associations and their monthly meetings. Those meeting are often open to non-members in related industries and may attract people who normally do not attend chamber events. Online social media networking can be powerful however, you cannot beat the old fashion face-to-face way!

What about Pinterest? This social network is a place to organize and share online images that you find interesting or inspiring and continues to reinforce the trending growth of an increasingly visual social web. Its users are extremely engaged. LinkedIn is another site that is mostly used by businesses. Remember to check out Google+ and YouTube.

?A business that doesn?t take the little time required to Blog or use social networking is ignoring one of the lowest-cost, highest returns on investments they can make,? says Paul Allen, CEO of MyFamily.com, and a social networking enthusiast. ?In just minutes you can set up a Facebook group or event and get dozens of interested people there. It?s a low-cost way to find potential contractors, employees or business partners,? he says.

My friend, Susan RoAne, The Mingling Maven?, says, ?The chitchat about chat rooms has exploded since I first wrote about it in 1995. We now have several generations of people whose virtual socializing, conversing and networking has exceeded their real time of each activity. With that, we have lost a lot of our personal touch. The on-line world not only gives us a new type of room to work, we also get thousands of possible ?rooms? in which to chat about anything, anywhere, anytime. It?s a room without the boundaries of walls or time, yet there are rules and boundaries of better behavior to be observed.?

I can say this: Networking with social media is not a fad. It will evolve and likely turn into something barely recognizable from the social media we know and use today. It will be here in some form or another forever. Social media can be confusing and sometimes overwhelming. However, be quick to learn new tools, new technologies ? and how to appropriately apply them to your business.

Exclusive: Iraq pipeline delays threaten Shell's Majnoon

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Delays in Iraq's pipeline construction threaten to stall production at Royal Dutch Shell's Majnoon oilfield for at least three months, forcing the field to miss a 2012 target of 175,000 barrels per day, oil ministry documents showed.

Wary of losses, Shell has asked Iraq for a waiver to start recovering costs if Majnoon does not meet its first commercial production target by year-end - a contract requirement before costs can be retrieved, according to documents seen by Reuters.

Shell's troubles illustrate infrastructure hurdles facing oil operators in the OPEC nation. Some oil majors have begun signing deals with Iraq's autonomous Kurdistan region, which they say offers more attractive conditions than the country's federal government in southern oilfields.

Majnoon is shut for maintenance. But lagging development could put off completion of the new pipeline until the first quarter of next year, according to a Shell document filed with the oil ministry.

"A key concern ... remains the uncertain delivery of the First Commercial Production (FCP) pipeline," said the official letter sent by Shell's managing director of Majnoon.

Another oil ministry document showed Shell had requested the South Oil Company (SOC) chief review its proposal to start retrieving costs by the end of 2012 in case Iraq failed to provide an export route to handle Majnoon's output.

"This principle will reduce significant investment risk," the document said.

One senior Iraqi oil ministry official, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitive nature of the matter, acknowledged pipeline progress was slow. But he said Shell was also behind on development at Majnoon to boost output.

The 12.6 billion barrel Majnoon oilfield is one of the major fields alongside Rumaila, West Qurna Phase One and Zubair that Iraq is developing with foreign companies in the south as it recovers from years of war and sanctions.

In February, production at Majnoon was 54,000 bpd, Shell says, but on average for the first quarter of this year, output was 18,600 bpd, far below the planned year-end target.

Production at the field was around 45,000 bpd when Shell took over in 2010.

Shell has since spent around $1 billion, and planned to invest another $1 billion in 2012.

OUTDATED PIPELINE

The existing 28-inch Majnoon pipeline cannot cope with the projected increase in crude production.

In May last year, Iraq and its partners Shell and Malaysia's Petronas awarded Dubai-based Dodsal Group a $106 million contract to build a 79-km (50-mile) pipeline from Majnoon to a crude storage depot near Zubair in southern Iraq.

The oil ministry rejected the deal on costs and handed the project to an oil ministry affiliate. Oil officials say the pipeline is not expected to be finished until March 2013.

Still, Iraq's contracts directorate has ruled "financial dues will be paid after the first commercial production," occurs, according to the oil ministry documents.

The Iraqi oil official said state-run companies are already working to speed up pipeline construction, and China Petroleum Pipeline (CPP) was contracted recently to build part of the line.

But drilling operations in Majnoon are moving at a slow pace, the official said, with only three wells completed since a contract for 15 wells was awarded in August 2010.

Questioning Shell's ability to meet the 175,000 bpd 2012 target, he said two production facilities with a capacity for processing 100,000 bpd of crude, essential for increasing production, were still unfinished at Majnoon.

Requests to Shell for comment on the documents were not answered.

Majnoon oilfield shutdown for maintenance work on June 26 and a company spokesman said it was difficult to estimate how long the repair work would take.

One ministry document said the shutdown could last at least four months starting from July 1, 2012.

Majnoon is just one part of Shell's Iraq portfolio. Europe's largest oil company has a significant foothold in Iraq, with a stake in a $17 billion gas joint venture and a minority shares in the West Qurna-1 oilfield, led by Exxon Mobil .

Good news for banana lovers: Help may be on the way to slow that rapid over-ripening

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? A solution finally may be at hand for the number one consumer gripe about bananas: their tendency to ripen, soften and rot into an unappetizing mush, seemingly in the blink of an eye.

Scientists speaking on August 22 in Philadelphia at the 244th National Meeting & Exposition of the American Chemical Society described efforts to develop a spray-on coating that consumers could use to delay the ripening of those 6.4 billion pounds of bananas that people in the U.S. eat every year.

The coating is a so-called "hydrogel," a superabsorbent material like those with many medical and commercial uses, made from chitosan, a substance derived from shrimp and crab shells. Xihong Li, Ph.D., who presented the report, noted that chitosan is attracting considerable attention in efforts to keep fruits and vegetables fresher longer due to its action in killing bacteria that cause produce to rot, low cost and other properties. Until now, however, it has not been used to slow the ripening of bananas.

"We found that by spraying green bananas with a chitosan aerogel, we can keep bananas fresh for up to 12 days," said Li, who is the study's leader. "Once bananas begin to mature, they quickly become yellow and soft, and then they rot. We have developed a way to keep bananas green for a longer time and inhibit the rapid ripening that occurs. Such a coating could be used at home by consumers, in supermarkets or during shipment of bananas."

Li explained that bananas, like other fresh fruit and vegetables, are alive and actually "breathing," or respirating. He is with Tianjin University of Science and Technology, Tianjin, China. Like other fresh fruit and vegetables, bananas stay alive after picking. Like people, bananas breathe, or respire, taking in oxygen and releasing carbon dioxide ? but through their skin. The more a banana respires, the quicker it ripens. Unlike many other fruits, the respiration rate in bananas does not slow down, and bananas do not ripen slowly. The banana's pulp releases a chemical that boosts respiration, and the pulp converts into the sugars that produce that sweet, banana taste. As respiration continues, however, the process speeds up, and bananas become unpleasantly sweet and mushy. Bacteria on the banana skin start to thrive and cause the banana to rot.

In their study, Li's team showed that the chitosan hydrogel coating slowed down respiration and killed bacteria that cause rotting, keeping bananas fresh for almost two weeks. But banana lovers should not go bananas over the hydrogel coating just yet. Li's team is on the trail of a new ingredient for producing the hydrogel that would replace an existing ingredient that would not be used commercially.

This study was supported by a National Natural Science Foundation of China Grant and the China Postdoctoral Science Foundation.

Complete Guidelines to Health and Fitness: FDA Approves Omnaris ...

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced today the approval of
Omnaris (ciclesonide) nasal spray, a new drug for the treatment of nasal
symptoms associated with seasonal and perennial allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, in adults and children 12 years of age and older.

Although the precise way Omnaris works is unknown, the drug is a corticosteroid. Corticosteroids are hormone-like drugs that suppress the immune response.

Allergic rhinitis is the medical term for the inflamed, runny nose that's the main symptom of allergies. Seasonal allergic rhinitis is the most common allergic disease. About 35 million Americans suffer from this condition. The ailment's classic symptoms are watery nasal discharge, and fits of sneezing, and itching that can affect not just the nose but the roof of the mouth, throat and the Eustachian tubes which connect the middle ear to the back of the throat.

The safety and efficacy of Omnaris nasal spray were studied in four randomized placebo controlled clinical trials ranging in duration from two weeks to a year. The studies assessed how well Omnaris treated symptoms (runny nose, nasal itching, sneezing, and nasal congestion) in patients with hay fever. The results of these trials showed that patients treated with Omnaris nasal spray had an 8-10 percent greater reduction in nasal symptoms compared to placebo. The difference between Omnaris nasal spray and placebo was significant.

The most common side effects in clinical studies were headache, nosebleeds, and inflammation of the nose and throat linings.

Romney and Obama now fight for edge on Medicare

(AP) ? The jobs-and-economy election suddenly seems all about Medicare ? for now, at least.

Republican Mitt Romney is embracing a topic his party usually approaches gingerly. He is taking a calculated risk that voters' worries about federal deficits and the Democrats' health care overhaul have opened the door for a robust debate on the solvency of Medicare, the insurance program for retirees.

President Barack Obama is welcoming the conversation, which has temporarily taken attention from the weak economic recovery.

One party may regret its position on Nov. 6.

Retirees in politically prized states such as Florida have often resisted changes in Medicare, one of the government's most popular but costliest programs. But GOP strategists say today's voters realize Medicare spending must be constrained, and Romney is banking on disenchantment with Obama's 2010 health care law to pave the way for his own proposals.

Romney, who has spent more than a year running almost entirely on the economy and jobs, put Medicare at the campaign's center when he chose as his running mate. Rep. Paul Ryan is Congress' chief advocate of significantly restraining entitlement programs.

Ryan was critical of Obama's handling of Medicare during a campaign stop in Springfield, Va., repeating his assertion thata the GOP ticket welcomed the debate over the future of Medicare. The Wisconsin congressman is expected to revisit Medicare in some depth in Florida on Saturday. He will face voters in a retirement community north of Orlando known as The Villages. Ryan's 78-year-old mother, a Medicare recipient, plans to attend.

"We will not duck the tough issues; we will lead," Ryan told the Virginia crowd.

Romney's willingness to tackle the issue was underscored Thursday when he used a marker and classroom-type whiteboard to summarize his thoughts on Medicare, with hardly a word about the unemployment rate. He said his plans would keep Medicare solvent while Obama's would not, a claim Democrats call absurd.

On Friday, summarizing the political view from the right, the Romney campaign distributed a Wall Street Journal editorial that declared: "By governing so far to the left, Mr. Obama may have neutralized 'Mediscare' and made voters more receptive to center-right solutions. Medicare is already changing because it must."

Obama's campaign has tried for months to tie Romney to House Republicans and Ryan's budget proposal, which would turn Medicare into a voucher-like system for future retirees.

The Obama campaign released a new TV ad Friday defending the president's record on Medicare. It points to the AARP, a group that represents senior citizens and said in a letter to lawmakers earlier this year that Ryan's plan would lead to higher costs for seniors.

Romney's campaign disputed the ad, and repeated its own claim that Obama's plans would siphon spending from Medicare without safeguarding the program's long-term stability.

Obama's campaign released a separate ad Friday that sought to undercut Romney by pointing to Ryan's voting record on funding for Planned Parenthood and abortion. "For women, for president, the choice is ours," the ad says. It was airing in Colorado, Nevada, Virginia, Ohio, Florida and Iowa.

Though Medicare dominated the debate Friday, the parties engaged in another brief skirmish on Romney's personal tax returns. His campaign rejected a call for Romney to release five years of his federal tax returns -- instead of the two years he has agreed to -- in exchange for the Obama campaign's pledge to drop further demands on the subject.

Romney and the White House also condemned a new round of anti-Israel remarks by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Romney told 80 people at a fundraiser overlooking the Long Island Sound: "Ahmadinejad of Iran made another series of vile statements about Israel, and excising Israel from the body of humanity, and so forth. And you recognize how critical it is to have leadership that describes precisely what it believes, describes what actions it's willing to take, and stands for something."

Otherwise, the Republican National Committee devoted its "weekend messaging memo" mainly to a graphic titled "Obama's Countdown to Medicare Bankruptcy."

Obama's Medicare policies are included in his 2010 health care overhaul, passed without a single Republican vote in Congress. Polls show "Obamacare" to be generally unpopular, though many key components, standing alone, enjoy wide support.

Obama's plan relies heavily on cutting payments to health care providers. Critics say that could cause some doctors to stop seeing Medicare patients.

The Romney-Ryan proposal would give future retirees a fixed amount of money to pick their health insurance from competing private plans or a government program. It would limit taxpayers' burden, but also force many patients to pay more of their health costs.

Romney is using the unpopularity of Obama's health care law to try to finesse a political problem.

Ryan has embraced Obama's call for about $716 billion in Medicare payment reductions, over 10 years, a move Romney opposes. In his whiteboard demonstration Thursday in South Carolina, Romney indicated his biggest objection to the $716 billion in reduced growth -- or savings -- is that the money is used to fund other elements of "Obamacare."

But those cuts are part of Ryan's overall budget blueprint. Ryan said he included them in his House plan because they were already part of current law ? in essence, because Obama did it first.

Eager to confront what they claim are Romney's distortions, Obama campaign aides produced their own "video whiteboard" Friday. In it, spokeswoman Stephanie Cutter says Obama's $716 billion savings comes from reductions in "waste, fraud and abuse" in the Medicare program. She labels as "ridiculous" Romney's claim that his GOP plan would extend Medicare's life.

Independent groups say Romney hasn't provided the details needed to support his claim.

Some Democrats seemed happy to have another campaign week go by with comparatively modest focus on the nation's 8.3 percent unemployment rate. The economy has remained voters' top priority in the campaign so far, although several polls conducted before Ryan's selection suggested the federal budget deficit was not far behind.

A Pew Research Center poll in June, for example, found 35 percent called "jobs" the most important issue in deciding their vote, while 23 percent chose the budget deficit, 19 percent health care, 11 percent Social Security, 5 percent immigration and 4 percent gay marriage.

Friday's Wall Street Journal editorial page -- an important forum for conservative debates -- said, "The destructive policy and unpopularity of Obamacare have made Paul Ryan's reform politically possible."

The Obama camp is trying to make it a political liability.

Unable to Crack Computer Virus, Security Firm Seeks Help ...

Five days after a computer security firm disclosed the discovery of Gauss, a computer virus targeting computers in Lebanon, they issued a cry for help.

Among Gauss?s most puzzling components is an encrypted ?warhead? that watches for a specific computer system with no Internet connection and installs itself only if it finds that configuration. The warhead has baffled security researchers at Kaspersky Lab, who first discovered the virus in June and have been unsuccessfully trying to crack its encryption code since.

?Despite our best efforts, we were unable to break the encryption,? Kaspersky researchers wrote in a blog post Tuesday. ?So today we are presenting all the available information about the payload in the hope that someone can find a solution and unlock its secrets. We are asking anyone interested in cryptology, numerology and mathematics to join us in solving the mystery and extracting the hidden payload.?

Until they crack the encryption, it is difficult to say precisely what Gauss is after. Clues point to a sophisticated computer virus that may have been developed by the same nation state, or group of nation states, that developed Flame, the computer virus that was spying on computers in Iran as recently as last May, and possibly Stuxnet, the virus that disrupted uranium enrichment work in Iran in 2010.

To date, Kaspersky?s researchers have detected Gauss on 2,500 computers, most in Lebanon. Its purpose appears to be to acquire log-ins for e-mail and instant messaging accounts, social networks and, notably, accounts at some of Lebanon?s largest banks ? the Bank of Beirut, Blom Bank, Byblos Bank and Credit Libanais ? along with Citibank and the online payment system PayPal.

But the warhead, which has been wrapped in several layers of encryption, suggests the attackers may be after something larger. ?All the precautions used by the authors indicate that the target is indeed high-profile,? the researchers wrote in their blog post.

The researchers say Gauss?s warhead is large enough to contain a ?Stuxnet-like? function. The New York Times reported in June that Stuxnet was jointly designed by the United States and Israel to search for the industrial control system that powered Iran?s uranium enrichment project, and was ultimately used to spin Iran?s centrifuges out of control.

If researchers are correct in assuming that Gauss is state-sponsored, it would be the first time such a virus had been found to include financial targets. Stuxnet, Flame and Doqu, another computer virus discovered in Iran, all appear to have been designed to spy on that country?s nuclear program.

Lebanon experts said previously that an American espionage campaign directed at Lebanese banks would make sense given United States concerns that Lebanon?s banks have been used to back the Syrian government and Hezbollah, the Lebanese militant group and political party. Last year, the United States Treasury identified a Lebanese bank, Beirut-based Lebanese Canadian Bank SAL, as a primary money-laundering facility for Hezbollah and Lebanese drug traffickers.

Swede in Cuba car crash worried about driver

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? A young Swedish politician who survived a car crash in Cuba that killed dissident Oswaldo Paya and another government opponent has described an intense five-day grilling about why he was in the country and said he is deeply worried about the fate of his Spanish colleague who was charged with vehicular manslaughter.

Aron Modig said in an interview published Friday that he doesn't remember anything about what led to the crash, recalling only fragments of how the car suddenly swerved off the road and how he regained consciousness in an ambulance. He said he fears for Angel Carromero, who was driving the rental car when it crashed on July 22 and could face up to 10 years in a Cuban jail.

"Nobody knows what's happening to him there," he said.

Paya's family has said it has doubts about the official explanation by Cuban authorities. In videotaped testimony, Carromero said he lost control of the car when it suddenly entered an unpaved area of road under construction and he slammed on the brakes, causing it to skid. A Cuban investigation found that Carromero was speeding and failed to heed traffic signs warning of the construction.

Modig, the 27-year-old head of the youth party of Sweden's conservative Christian Democrats, returned home on July 31 after what he said were days of high-pressure questioning in a windowless room in Havana by Cuban police.

"The questions are always the same: 'Why are you here? Who sent you?' They switched between asking questions and scolding: 'Don't come to our country and interfere'," Modig told the daily Dagens Nyheter in the interview. "In a dictatorship that's no good, of course I got worried."

No questions were posed about the accident, he said.

Cuban media has reported that Carromero and Modig entered the country on July 19 on tourist visas and brought ?4,000 ($4,900) for Paya's organization and helped organize dissident youth wings, though Paya's family denies that he received any money from the Europeans. The government considers the small opposition to be subversive and objects to foreign-based efforts to support them.

The car crash happened while the four were on their way to Santago de Cuba, the island's second largest city. Soon after the accident, speculation spread that a second vehicle was pursuing the rented car and might even have run it off the road.

Carromero, an activist with a conservative Spanish party, and Modig have both said no other car was involved, but Paya's family has asked for an independent investigation.

Modig's party had initially scheduled a news conference upon his return to Sweden two weeks ago, but canceled it in the last minute, citing the ongoing legal process in Cuba. The interview in Dagens Nyheter is the first he has given since his return; he was not immediately available for more comment.
