Buzz over Higgs boson hits new heights

ATLAS Collaboration / CERN

This diagram shows the results of a proton-on-proton collision in the Large Hadron Collider's ATLAS detector last September, with four muons indicated by red tracks. Such a result could be consistent with the Standard Model with or without the Higgs boson, depending on the analysis of multiple events.

By Alan Boyle

Has the Higgs boson finally been detected? It's almost gotten to the point that if a discovery of some sort doesn't come out of next week's update on the multibillion-dollar subatomic search, it'll be a big surprise. But how far will the announcement go, and what will it mean for the future of physics?

To refresh your memory, the Higgs boson is the only fundamental subatomic particle predicted by theory but not yet detected. It's thought to play a role in endowing some particles, such as the W and Z boson, with mass ... while leaving other particles, such as the photon, massless. The Higgs mechanism, proposed by British physicist Peter Higgs and others in the 1960s, could have played a role in electroweak symmetry breaking, which was a key event in the rise of the universe as we know it.

The Higgs boson is so key to the current understanding of fundamental physics that Nobel-winning scientist Leon Lederman nicknamed it the "God Particle"?? a term that has been making other physicists wince ever since. Another religion-tinged cliche would be to call it the "holy grail of particle physics," as CERN physicist John Ellis has. He says finding the Higgs is a key goal for the $10 billion Large Hadron Collider.

"That's one thing that we're really looking forward to with the LHC," Ellis told me five years ago. "In fact, back when we persuaded the politicians to stump up the money to build the thing, that's probably what we told them."

Last December, the teams reported that they saw "tantalizing hints" of the Higgs' existence at a mass of around 125 billion electron volts, or 125 GeV. But the confidence in those results was not yet high enough to claim a discovery.?Now the teams behind the collider's CMS and ATLAS experiments have collected higher piles of data, at higher energy levels, sparking higher expectations.

An hour-long BBC Horizon documentary focuses on the hunt for the Higgs boson.

The 5-sigma fetish
When physicists talk about their confidence, they talk in terms of statistical "sigma" levels. The higher the sigma, the less likely that the results are just a fluke. In particle physics, 3 sigma constitutes strong evidence, but it takes 5 sigma to accept the results as a discovery. At the 5-sigma level, statisticians say there's roughly one chance out of 3 million that you're leaping to the wrong conclusion, as opposed to a 1-in-1,000 chance at the 3-sigma level.?That distinction makes a big difference when you're sifting through billions upon billions of proton-on-proton collision reports.

Last year, the best that the LHC teams could do was 3.6 sigma for ATLAS, and 2.6 for CMS. Now physicists are looking for a 5.

For three weeks, the teams have been running the numbers on their experimental results in secret, so as to avoid any chance that one analysis will influence the other. Their results are to be announced during a presentation at the CERN nuclear research center in Geneva, which will be webcast starting at 9 a.m. CEST (3 a.m. ET) on July 4. Although no official word has leaked out, the unofficial word is that someone looking for a discovery could get to the magic number.

"Reports from the experiments indicate that at least one of them, if not both, will reach the 5 sigma level of significance for the Higgs signal, when they combine 2011 and 2012 data and the most sensitive channel. So, this will definitely be the long-awaited Higgs discovery announcement, and party time for HEP [high-energy physics] physicists," Columbia mathematician Peter Woit wrote on his Not Even Wrong blog a week ago.

Since then, other physicist-bloggers have been fine-tuning the expectations. Here's a selection:

  • On the Resonaances blog, physicist Adam Falkowski (a.k.a. Jester) has a countdown clock ticking toward the Higgs discovery. "It is not clear, at least to me, if either of the two experiments will pass the 5-sigma fetish. But it does not really matter. ... What's going to change next Wednesday is that the status of the Higgs will be upgraded from 'almost certain' to 'beyond reasonable doubt.'"
  • On Quantum Diaries, Southern Methodist University physicist Aidan Randle-Conde advises against trying to combine the data from the two teams to get to 5 sigma. "With all this pressure to get as much out of the data as possible, it's tempting to move too quickly and do what we can to get a discovery, but now is not the time to rush things," he writes.
  • On the?ViXra Log, Philip Gibbs says that when CERN's researchers report their progress, "it is likely that the main question they are investigating will switch from 'Is there a Higgs Boson?' to 'Is it the Standard Model Higgs boson?'"
  • On a blog titled "Of Particular Significance,"?Rutgers physicist Matt Strassler advises caution,?but also suggests getting "the cases of champagne ready, in case the time has finally come to pop the corks." He points out that a discovery announcement would by no means be the end of the story. "Even if we see strong evidence of a Higgs-like particle ... the correct understanding of that particle?? in particular, determining whether it is or isn't a 'simplest Higgs'?? may take years."
  • As we approach H-Hour, you can expect to hear more via all these outlets as well as other blogs such as Cosmic Variance?and "A Quantum Diaries Survivor."

Physicist Gigi Rolandi discusses the Higgs search in a CERN video.

Hedging on the Higgs
What Strassler and Gibbs are saying is important: Technically speaking, CERN is unlikely to announce that the Higgs boson has been definitively discovered. It's more likely that physicists will talk about a new particle that has a signature consistent with the Higgs but has to be investigated further.

CERN hinted at that approach last week in the news release announcing Wednesday's webcast. "It's a bit like spotting a familiar face from afar," said the center's director general, Rolf Heuer. "Sometimes you need closer inspection to find out whether it's really your best friend, or actually your best friend's twin."

Gigi Rolandi, a senior research physicist at CERN, used a similar analogy in a video released this week, referring to crops of corn (which he calls maize, as most Europeans do), wheat (which he calls corn) and poppy flowers. Some particles are as easy to spot as a red poppy in a wheat field, he said. But not the Higgs.?"The search for the Higgs is more similar to looking for a single plant of maize among many, many corn plants, than looking for a poppy among the corn," he said.

We'll get a foretaste of Wednesday's proceedings on Monday, when Fermilab is due to provide its final update on the Higgs boson search, based on the full set of data from the now-closed Tevatron. Will Fermilab try to steal some of CERN's thunder, at least for a couple of days? Stay tuned....

Google Nexus 10 Tablet Supposedly in the Making as Well

It appears that Google has been preparing not only the 7 inch Nexus tablet that it unveiled on Wednesday, but also a 10 incher, according to the usual sources quoted by Digitimes. ?Touch panel manufacturers? are at the centre of this rumor, according to people in the know.

Google Nexus 7 already looks like a hit and a Nexus 10, with reasonable price and better specs would also conquer the market and be a real iPad rival. The Nexus 7 is a smaller alternative to the bigger tablet, but there are some people out there who really like the bit 9.7 inch or 10.1 inch screens on slates. Some will maybe buy the 13 inch Toshiba tablet? So that?s why Google is actually planning a bigger diagonal model and will get its touch panels from AU Optronics and Wintek for the Nexus 10.

Wintek is also considered a supplier for the Nexus 7 as well and it?s supposed to have already shipped 500,000 touch panels for the Jelly Bean slate in June. Also, Wintek is a very solid ASUS partner, having supplied them with over 1 million touch panels in the May ? July time frame and as you know ASUS is the company that makes the Nexus 7. TPK Holding is another company expected to jump in with some panels, so something big?s cooking. How does a $300 quad core 10 inch LTE tablet sound?

I'm Sorry for Cursing - Colon / rectal cancer: And...chemo!

First of all, I want to say a huge thank you to everyone who sent messages with words of encouragement and promises to pray.? I needed it yesterday more than you can know.? Despite the chemo, today has been a much better day emotionally.

So, chemo.? I got my own room today, suckas!? It's kind of nice to know that people aren't watching me drool while I nod off.? It was very quiet.? Nice today.? I'll get the pump off after lunch on Friday.? Very uneventful.

My plan now is to rest and knit.? I finished up some surprises and I'm now moving on to a dress for Reese.? We shall see how that turns out.? So far, so good, I think, although I never quite know until I'm finished.

If I don't pop in for a week or so, no worries.? Our family is going to do some traveling.? :)

Justin Bieber Vs. Walk The Moon: This Means 'War'

'We're blatantly trying to start a war with Justin Bieber,' WTM's Nicholas Petricca says of major-label debut, released the same day as Believe.
By James Montgomery

Last week, Walk the Moon's rise from hard-touring, hotly tipped indie act to major-label priority was completed with the release of their self-titled RCA Records debut (not to mention a performance on "Late Show with David Letterman"). It's been a two-year trek, but now, thanks to the slow-burning success of their song "Anna Sun," they're finally able to stop and appreciate everything that's happened along the way ... even if they can't believe most of it has.

"Right now things are kind of surreal. We've just kind of gone through this laundry list of things we grew up hoping would happen in some dream life, and we're just knocking them off the list," frontman Nicholas Petricca told MTV News. "Like Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza and getting signed to a major record label ... things we never thought were impossible, but were far-fetched; things where your parents stop being like 'OK, let me know when you get a real job.' "

"I don't think they ever stop bugging us," bassist Kevin Ray added. "But the bugging has changed from a suggestive, like, 'When are you just gonna give up? C'mon, get a job,' to 'Hey, we're coming to the show, can we get tickets? Can we get an advance copy?'"

And, having finally earned their parents' approval, Walk the Moon are setting their sights on an even bigger goal: dethroning Justin Bieber. As it turns out, their major-label debut hit stores on the same day as Justin Bieber's Believe, and now, they're making it very clear that they're gunning for JB's crown.

"We're blatantly trying to start a war with Justin Bieber ... we're coming for you, man," Petricca laughed. "No, I don't know. The dream has already come true in certain ways; [the album is] out there, and the fact that it's out is enough for us. But, it would be really cool if it got in the Top 10, or if it did this or that."

"Just one tweet, Bieber," bassist Kevin Ray smiled. "Just one."

And while they might not get Bieber just yet, WTM are clearly aiming high with their major-label bow ... after all, they've already come this far, so why stop now?

"It's interesting how success is a moving target," guitarist Eli Maiman said. "You start off thinking, 'Boy it would be really cool if ten people came to my gig,' and then it's getting signed, and then it's putting out a record for real and then it's pushing Usher out of the Top 10 on iTunes, and then it's getting that Bieber kid. I don't think we'll be satisfied until we're making Coldplay look like a garage band."

Why the Penn State sex abuse saga could go on for years (+video)

The FBI is investigating whether Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky broke federal law in sexually abusing boys. The university faces civil suits seeking compensation for Sandusky's victims.

By Mark Guarino,?Staff writer / June 23, 2012

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky (L), his defense attorney Joe Amendola and wife Dottie (R) look on in this courtroom sketch as the verdict is read during Sandusky's child sex abuse trial in Bellefonte, PA June 22, 2012. A jury found Sandusky guilty on 45 of 48 child sex abuse charges.

The trial and guilty verdict of former Penn State defensive coach Jerry Sandusky took exactly two weeks, but the saga is nowhere close to an end.

Not only do his attorneys plan to mount an appeal, but Mr. Sandusky, the university, and top school administrators also face additional legal battles that are expected to stretch on for years.

A jury in Bellefonte, Pa. deliberated for 21 hours over two days before delivering a verdict late Friday, finding Sandusky guilty on 45 of the 48 counts against him involving sexual abuse of 10 boys over a 15-year period. He will likely face a sentence of life in prison.

IN PICTURES:?Fallout from the Penn State scandal

Legal experts say the overwhelming number of accusers and evidence, ranging from love letters Sandusky penned to an eyewitness testimony to the abuse, were too much of a hurdle for the defense to overcome. They helped establish a narrative that Sandusky was a predatory pedophile who used a charity he founded to help at-risk children to groom victims, and the high-powered athletic culture he existed in helped enable the abuse over years.

Sandusky did not testify; instead surrogates vouched for his character and questioned the motives of the prosecution witnesses. The rare times the public heard his side of the story were two media interviews he gave shortly following his November 2011 arrest in which he gave meandering answers to questions related to his relationship with children.

Daniel Filler, a law professor at Drexel University in Philadelphia and a former public defender in Pennsylvania, says ?the only hope Sandusky had was to testify? but the media appearance doomed that opportunity.

?For better or for worse, Jerry Sandusky gave an audition about what it would be like on the stand when he talked in the press and his lawyers looked at the audition and didn?t like what they saw,? Mr. Filler says. ?If he couldn?t even answer the simplest, most straightforward questions with a clear denial, I don?t think you could have coached him.?

What happens next is an appeal by his attorneys who say they plan to push ?substantial constitutional questions? related to what they describe as anecdotal evidence used to arrive at the verdict.

?All the convictions could come back on that ruling alone,? said Karl Rominger, one of Sandusky?s attorneys.

Possible federal charges are looming against Sandusky. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has launched a probe looking into some of the abuse allegations since they may have involved travel to other states.

During the trial, Sandusky?s attorneys warned that some of the accusers were elaborating their stories with the aim of earning money from future civil litigation. Filler says future plaintiffs will not likely be seeking money against Sandusky himself, but against Penn State and individual officials who are alleged to have been slow to stop the abuse once it became evident it was happening, sometimes even on university property.

?The money is with the university and the insurance policies that are carried by the university as a corporate entity,? says Filler.

Penn State athletic director Tim Curley and Gary Schultz, a former vice president in charge of the campus police, both face charges of perjury and failure to report child abuse. Their trial is expected next year. Both men say they are innocent.

Another target is former university president Graham Spanier who resigned soon after Sandusky?s arrest. All three men were the focus of a grand jury report that criticized their failure to report accusations from former assistant football coach Mike McQueary, who said he saw Sandusky sexually assaulting a boy in the locker room shower of the university?s athletic department in 2001.

The university said it hopes to settle as many cases as possible. In a statement released Friday, the university said it plans to establish a process where it ?can privately, expeditiously and fairly address the victims? concerns and compensate them for claims? and that it will ?reach out to counsel to the victims of Mr. Sandusky?s abuse in the near future with additional details.?

Penn State?s Board of Trustees has also hired former FBI Director Louis Freeh to investigate the university?s handing of the Sandusky accusations. So far, Mr. Freeh has conducted over 400 interviews. In late May, Mr. Spanier sued the university to obtain emails he sent and received between 1998 and 2004 that he says he needs to prepare for interviews related to the investigation. The university denied the request under the direction of the Pennsylvania Attorney General?s Office, which is conducting its own investigation.

Besides the bombshell allegations expected to result from the Freeh report ? much of which is expected to steer all future civil challenges ? the Penn State community is expected to continue its struggle to recover from the scandal that began seven months ago.

Many critics point to its prestigious athletics program that elevated Sandusky to the status of ?a Teflon Don? and allowed him to operate in broad daylight, says Chuck Williams, director of the Center for the Prevention of School-Aged Violence in Philadelphia.

?He was observed taking showers with boys, wrestling with them, for years. Students saw it, coaches saw it, and administrators did nothing because he was such an iconic figure,? Mr. Williams says. ?That community has a lot of soul searching to do about why they allowed it to persist for so long without doing anything.?

Badgevilles Acquires Gamification.org, Grabs The ?Gamification? Username On Twitter, Facebook, YouTube

badgeville-250x250So that's how Badgeville is using some of that $25 million in funding from May. The engagement-focused startup (and former TechCrunch Disrupt participant) is today announcing the acquisition of?the?Gamification.org?Community from Gamify, a two-year old online community that also just happened to have the rights to the the "gamification" username on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and Google+ . Yep, @gamification is now in the hands of Badgeville (or it will be as soon as they get the password, says Badgeville CEO?Kris Duggan.) While Duggan won't disclose the terms of the deal, he notes that it was for the community and namespace assets only ?- they didn't buy the company. It was a cash and equity deal, he says. [Update: we're hearing that Gamify was asking $100,000-$300,000 for the property.]

HP Pavilion dv6 gets treated to AMD's Trinity processor, shakes hands with Ivy Bridge twin

HP Pavilion dv6 gets treated to AMD's Trinity processor, shakes hands with Ivy Bridge version

HP's Pavilion dv6 must be pretty popular. That's how we'd explain the fact that the laptop will be one of the first to land with AMD's Trinity chipset -- despite already appearing with an Ivy Bridge refresh. According to Laptop Reviews, the Pavilion dv6-7010 will arrive with the quad-core AMD A8-4500M APU, teamed with a Radeon 7640G graphics card, six gigs of RAM and 750GB of storage. The outer specs remain unchanged, but there is one other difference worth mentioning; it's priced at $700 -- a hundred bucks less than the Intel version.

[Thanks Andrew]

Sin City's Playboy Club shuts down for good

The Playboy Club at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas has closed.

Nightclub management firm N9NE (NINE) Group issued a statement Monday confirming the permanent closure.

Company spokeswoman Ashli Kimenker says there has been no announcement yet about other plans for the space at the high-rise casino west of the Strip.

The casino and Playboy Enterprises said in March that the closure was amicable, and that the parties planned to "pursue new brand opportunities in Las Vegas nightlife."

The Playboy Club at the Palms opened in October 2006, with women dressed in bunnies dealing cards.

At the time, it was the first Playboy Club to open since 1988, when patriarch Hugh Hefner closed the last one in Lansing, Mich.

Others have since opened in Macau, Cancun and London.
