There are a few common ways to control gophers; by trapping, baiting or gassing. In order to trap a gopher probe is used to locate the main burrow and then the traps are set in the tunnels leading to the burrow. Normally bait is not necessary but there are occasions when a bated trap is more effective.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Most people wouldn't dare call chiseled WWE superstar John Cena any names, let alone "a bowl of Fruity Pebbles."

But in the lead up to their WrestleMania 28 "Once in a Lifetime" match Sunday in Miami, that's exactly what The Rock told Cena he looked like.

Instead of getting upset, Cena said he turned the situation around by contacting the cereal maker, now he's on "three million boxes of the stuff."

While it was done in typical WWE trash-talk fashion, Cena says the pressure can get to you.

"I'm one of those guys that gets cheered, but also gets booed. Those who don't like me, severely don't like me," Cena told the Associated Press on Friday. "Usually your first instinct is to lash out at these people. ... but I believe you always need to turn a negative into a positive."

Heavily involved in the Be-A-Star anti-bullying campaign, Cena is not just a voice for the cause, he also says he was a victim.

According the former WWE Heavyweight champion, he was bullied as a kid because he loved rap and wore hip-hop clothing in a town where it wasn't popular. He started lifting weights to protect himself.

"By the time I was 15, I was a built kid, and the comments didn't come so often, and the people making fun of me sort of fell by the wayside," Cena said.

While most of it was talk, Cena doesn't see much of a difference when it comes to hurtful remarks.

"The introduction of social media pretty much gives everyone a voice, but unfortunately, people choose to use that voice in a negative way," Cena said.

Cena wants young people to know that not everyone is going to like you for who you are: "The best way to get back at them is to put a smile on your face and do whatever you can to succeed."

While he's in the business of physical confrontations and verbal assaults, he said insults still affect you. He also wants victims to know that, so Cena refuses to block anyone or edit his Twitter account.

"There's a lot of negative stuff on there and some of it is personal," he said. "When you're a kid that feels that everything is coming down on you, you can look and see that this truly does happen to everybody."

The former WWE heavyweight champion also addressed the role of judging people by the clothes they wear, namely the recent debate over hoodies.

Cena doesn't feel they make a negative statement, saying: "I've never seen clothing as a problem."

Trayvon Martin's death has sparked a debate about whether hooded sweatshirts present a negative image. While Cena didn't speak specifically about the case, he said that what people wear isn't the main concern: 'It's the demeanor."

Seventeen-year-old Martin was shot and killed in Sanford, Fla., last month by a neighborhood watch volunteer who has claimed self-defense and has not yet been arrested.

Golf Shoe Trends Promote Feel Fashion

If you think there's nothing new under the golf shoe sun, that the category begins and ends with leather-bound saddle oxfords, then you might want to tune in. Manufacturers have made major strides, if you'll pardon the pun, toward more lightweight, casual, even streetwise styles.

That's right, streetwise golf shoes.

At least two major brands have introduced golf shoes that double as off-course kicks. That means no spikes, of course. (Can't go tromping around the kitchen or tavern with those, can we?) It also means these models look nothing like golf shoes.

At least, not your grandfather's golf shoes. Not your dad's, either. In fact, not even your big brother's.

Let's run through a few of the trends currently moving golf footwear forward.

Dual-use versatility

Until recently, one could wear his athletic or casual shoes for golf, but not the other way around. But once metal spikes gave way to plastic, it was only a matter of time before pointy protrusions were deemed unnecessary altogether.

ECCO and Ashworth now offer shoes suitable for an 18-hole round and the happy hour that follows. Naturally, the street-inspired style appeals to younger - perhaps less committed - golfers. But these models promise good traction with flat, well-nubbed soles, so slippage isn't an issue.

Skeptics should note that forever youthful Fred Couples plays in just such a pair, and he had no problems en route to four Champions Tour victories and a sub-68 scoring average in 2010. (Of course, Freddie's swing is so smooth he could stay balanced in roller skates.)

Go low and feel the course

Traditional golf shoes, with their thick soles and spikes, hoist the golfer off the ground while nailing him to it. A new movement puts players more in touch with turf.

By dispensing with spikes and softening shoe bottoms, innovative companies are encouraging golfers to feel the course through their feet. These low-profile models are said to promote more natural footwork for better balance and rhythm. They're super-light too, weighing in at as little as 11 ounces per shoe.

Shoemakers have also discovered that pinching the toes into a tight, pointed space is no way to treat these precious digits. Wider toe boxes have come into vogue, further enhancing feel along with comfort.

Some traditionalists sniff that these shoes are better suited to the bowling alley. (Or worse yet, the circus.) Wearers swear by them, crediting lower scores to the unequalled feel.

Boot camp

It may be a while before you see a tour pro sporting golf boots. Then again, don't put it past Ian Poulter.

Yes, high-tops have made their way from the basketball court to the golf course. While they've yet to catch on with a broad audience, golf boots are out there for those seeking something truly different. Aside from their conversation-starting looks, boots are a good choice when conditions are especially wet, muddy or cold. They also appeal to golfers who need added support for troublesome ankles.

Far from a revolutionary idea, golf boots actually recall the original golf footwear patented by William Park in 1917. As they say, everything old is new again.

Alaska deal aims to develop Point Thomson gas

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) ? Alaska Gov. Sean Parnell said Friday that the state has reached a settlement in the long-running dispute over leases to develop the Point Thomson gas fields, clearing the way for progress on a major pipeline project.

Parnell had set a Saturday deadline for the major players on Alaska's North Slope to coalesce behind plans for a liquefied natural gas pipeline to get the region's resources to market.

He confirmed that a settlement was reached with companies including BP, Exxon Mobil and ConocoPhillips, which agreed to align with TransCanada Corp. so work toward a pipeline would be coordinated.

"Ending litigation and reaching alignment are important first steps," Parnell said, but he said additional work remains toward advancing the plans.

Exxon Mobil Corp., BP PLC and ConocoPhillips said they agreed on a plan to focus on a large-scale liquefied natural gas project, capable of overseas exports, as an alternative to a pipeline through Alberta, Canada, that would serve North America. This option could also align more closely with an effort to meet in-state gas needs, they said.

"This agreement does not guarantee a major gas line for Alaska, but it certainly moves us a significant step closer," said state Natural Resources Commissioner Dan Sullivan.

Parnell set expectations for progress on a major gas line in his State of the State address in January. The first step was to have resolution on the disputed leases at the Point Thomson gas fields by Feb. 8, the date the Alaska Supreme Court was to hear arguments in the long-running case.

The dispute erupted when the state began pulling leases it believes energy companies held for too long without developing. The Thomson Point leases are seen as critical to the fortunes of a gas pipeline, long-sought by Alaskans as a way to shore up revenues amid declining oil production, create jobs, and provide a reliable source of energy.

Parnell's second demand was to have Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips align under an "Alaska Gasline Inducement Act framework" by the end of the first quarter. Such alignment was to include work on a large liquefied natural gas line through Alaska to tidewater that would allow for overseas exports.

Parnell said he expected the companies to have firmer numbers on a liquefied natural gas project by the end of September, and to identify a specific project and work schedule.

Completion of the first task ? resolution on the Point Thomson leases ? didn't come until this week. The settlement, which also includes Chevron Corp. and Leede Operating Co., mandates development plans.

Point Thomson, located 60 miles east of Prudhoe Bay, is Alaska's largest undeveloped oil and gas field, holding an estimated 8 trillion cubic feet of natural gas and hundreds of millions of barrels of oil and gas liquids, Parnell's office said.

The inducement act was passed under former Gov. Sarah Palin as a way to jumpstart a pipeline. TransCanada holds an exclusive license to advance a line under terms of the act and has been working with Exxon Mobil.

BP and ConocoPhillips, which balked at terms of the inducement act, pursued a rival project to the Lower 48, but that folded last year when it couldn't garner the commitments needed to move forward.

So far, TransCanada, too, has focused its efforts on a line that would serve North America markets. But changes over the last several years, including the rise of shale gas, have led to concerns that there will be little demand for Alaska gas in the continental U.S.

In October, Parnell called on Exxon Mobil, BP and ConocoPhillips to unite behind a project that allows for liquefied natural gas exports to the Pacific Rim if the gas market has truly shifted from the Lower 48. In January, he met with the companies' executives to discuss ways to advance a line.

Parnell said Friday that Alaskans should not miss the "historic significance" of the oil company CEOs coming together.

In a letter to Parnell, the CEOs of Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips and BP said they are looking at what it will take for a liquefied natural gas project ? and to get gas off the North Slope to market ? including a timeline and an assessment of major project elements, including global liquefied natural gas trends.

The CEOs said getting gas to market won't be easy, noting, among other things, that "unprecedented commitments of capital" for gas development by the companies will first require "competitive and stable fiscal terms" ? meaning terms on taxes ? from the state.

Parnell has said that if all the milestones he set out for a project are accomplished, the Legislature can take up the issue of gas taxes next year.

U.S. Autism Rate Rises to 1 in 88 Children, CDC Reports

Boys have even higher risk; experts say part of increase may be due to better diagnosis.

THURSDAY, March 29 (HealthDay News) ? The rate of autism spectrum disorders continues to rise among American children, with one in 88 now receiving such a diagnosis, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Thursday.

That?s an increase from the one in 110 estimate released by the CDC just two years ago. The newer data, from 2008, also shows that autism is almost five times more common in boys than girls, with one in 54 boys diagnosed with the condition.

Why the steady uptick in cases? That?s not entirely clear, experts said.

?We know that people want answers to what?s causing this increase, and so do we,? Coleen Boyle, director of CDC?s National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities, said during a noon press briefing on Thursday.

?Some of the increase is due to the way children are identified, diagnosed and served,? she said. ?Although exactly how much is attributable to these factors is not known.?

Mark Roithmayr, president of the national advocacy group Autism Speaks, theorized that about half of the increase is accounted for by better diagnosis. But he agreed that the reasons for the rest of the increase remain unknown.

According to CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden, ?Autism is a complex condition, and there remain many unanswered questions.? Speaking at the press conference, he said that ?we are learning more every day, but still have a great deal to learn.?

What is known, according to Roithmayr, is that, ?very clearly now, there is an autism epidemic in the United States.? And the increase in incidence ? about a 23 percent jump every two years ? has been ongoing, he said.

The report was published Thursday in the CDC?s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

According to the new CDC numbers, the rate of children being diagnosed with autism varies widely by state: From one in 210 in Alabama to one in 47 in Utah. The biggest increase in diagnoses was seen among Hispanics and blacks, according to the report.

The data show that about 11 in every 1,000 8-year-old children have now been diagnosed with autism, a 23 percent increase since the last report in 2009.

One hopeful sign: there are more early diagnoses, which can aid in treatment, experts noted. The CDC said that more children are now being diagnosed by the age of 3. Among children born in 1994, just 12 percent of cases were being diagnosed by that age, but for children born in 2000 that number increased to 18 percent.

Of course, the severity of an autism spectrum disorder can vary depending on the child. About 9 percent of those with autism are what is called ?high-functioning,? about
44 percent have the most serious form of the condition and 47 percent have various milder forms of autism, Roithmayr noted.

He added that there is a panel, set up by the American Psychiatric Association, that is currently looking at changing the definition of autism. Such a change could affect these numbers and will be included in the next edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the ?bible? of psychological disorders used by psychiatrists worldwide.

Shrinking the definition of autism is bound to meet with controversy, however. ?It is imperative that DSM5 not exclude anyone on the spectrum,? Roithmayr said. ?If it does, we are going on a big offensive.?

Autism has other costs, too. According to Autism Speaks, the financial burden related to autism has tripled over the past six years. Based on these new numbers, the group estimated that the annual price tag for autism in the United States will reach $137 billion, he said. ?This is a national emergency,? Roithmayr said, and he believes insurance companies must do more to help parents shoulder the cost of caring for a child affected by autism.

All of this points to the need for more funding for research on the genetic and environmental causes of autism, he added.

?It?s concerning that there continues to be a steady increase in autism spectrum disorders,? said Dr. Andrew Adesman, chief of developmental behavioral pediatrics at the Steven Alexandra Children?s Medical Center of New York, in New Hyde Park.

Although there are some children with autism who can show significant gains there are many who don?t, which highlights the long-term impact of the problem on both individuals and society, Adesman added.

?This is a significant problem from a public health standpoint,? he said. ?There is a need for parents and clinicians to identify children with autism spectrum disorder as early as possible in the hopes that it would maximize children?s developmental outcome.?

Infants with Batten disease, a rare but fatal neurological disorder, appear healthy at birth. But within a few short years, the illness takes a heavy toll, leaving children blind, speechless and paralyzed. Most die by age 5.

There are no effective treatments for the disease, which can also strike older children. And several therapeutic approaches, evaluated in mouse models and in young children, have produced disappointing results.

But now, working in mice with the infantile form of Batten disease, scientists at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Kings College London have discovered dramatic improvements in life span and motor function by treating the animals with gene therapy and bone marrow transplants.

The results are surprising, the researchers say, because the combination therapy is far more effective than either treatment alone. Gene therapy was moderately effective in the mice, and bone marrow transplants provided no benefit, but together the two treatments created a striking synergy.

The research is online in the Annals of Neurology.

"Until now, this disease has been refractory to every therapy that has been thrown at it," says senior author Mark Sands, PhD, professor of medicine and of genetics at the School of Medicine. "The results are the most hopeful to date, and they open up a new avenue of research to find effective therapies to fight this devastating disease."

The combination therapy did not cure the disease, the scientists caution, but mice that received both treatments experienced significant, lasting benefits.

Mice that got gene therapy and a bone marrow transplant lived nearly 18.5 months, more than double the lifespan of untreated mice with the disease. (Healthy laboratory mice live about 24 months.) And for a significant portion of their lives, motor skills in mice that got both therapies were indistinguishable from those in normal, healthy mice.

While bone marrow transplants carry significant risks, especially in children, the researchers say they may be able to combine gene therapy with another treatment to achieve the same results. This same approach potentially could be used to treat other forms of Batten disease.

Batten disease is an inherited genetic disorder that strikes fewer than five of every 100,000 U.S. children but is slightly more common in northern Europe. There are several forms of the disease, diagnosed at different ages, and all are related to the inability of cells to break down and recycle proteins.

The infantile form is caused by mutations in the PPT1 gene that codes for an enzyme needed to remove these proteins from cells. Without a working copy of the gene, the proteins build up in cells, causing seizures, brain atrophy and dementia. The disease progresses most rapidly when it is diagnosed in infants. By age 2, most live in an unresponsive, vegetative state.

In the new study, the researchers tested various therapies in four groups of newborn mice with infantile Batten disease. One received only gene therapy; another received only bone marrow transplants; a third was treated with gene therapy and bone marrow transplants; and a fourth group received no treatment. As a comparison, the study included healthy mice without the disorder.

Gene therapy to replace the PPT1 enzyme was delivered directly into the brain. Bone marrow transplants were given with the intent that donor cells would migrate to the brain and deliver additional enzyme to regions of the brain not reached by gene therapy.

But that's not what happened, Sands says. Although gene therapy delivered relatively high levels of PPT1 enzyme, the bone marrow transplants did not supply any additional enzyme. Rather, he and his colleagues discovered that mice receiving both therapies experienced a dramatic reduction in brain inflammation.

"We suspect that the normal immune cells from the bone marrow transplant substantially reduce inflammation in the brain because we just don't see much of it in mice that got both therapies," Sands says. "This helps the PPT1 enzyme to do its job inside cells."

The study's results show no increase in life span for mice receiving bone marrow transplantation alone compared to untreated mice ? animals in both groups lived a median of 8.9 months. Mice that got only gene therapy lived 13.5 months, while those that got the combination therapy lived for 18.5 months.

The researchers noted similar effects of the therapies when they evaluated motor function. By 6 months, both untreated mice and those that received only a bone marrow transplant had experienced significant declines in motor skills. Mice that got gene therapy alone experienced a decline in motor function beginning at 10 months, and in those that got combination therapy, motor skills did not begin to decline until 13 months and did so more gradually than in the other mice.

Mice that got the combination therapy also had higher levels of active PPT1 enzyme in the brain, a thicker cerebral cortex and fewer accumulated proteins in brain cells, all indicators that the treatment is working.

Sands is now repeating the experiment and investigating other ways to reduce inflammation in the brain that would not involve the risks of a bone marrow transplant. One possibility, he says, involves anti-inflammatory drugs that have effects in the brain.

"We may be able to achieve the same results with a less invasive anti-inflammatory treatment," Sands says. "We're very excited now to move forward."
